MAP AND DIAGRAM

The diagram shows the layout of Queen’s Mary
Hospital site.
2001 2021

2041
A Map: Introductory Statement

The layout compares the changes occurring in

Queen’s Mary Hospital site from 2001 to 2041,
observed in a two-decade cycle.
A Map: Overview

Overall, the hospital area has several sections added,

resized, and relocated.
A Map: Tips
 Overview: provide group of changes (remodeled,
repurposed, installment, demolition, resized,
relocation) or the most notable changes

 Simple past tense and present perfect tense are

often used (future tense for a planned layout)

 Passive voice is commonly used

A Map: Details

In 2001, the hospital was built close to a main road and next to a shopping
centre. A large area behind the hospital was a car park, while the area behind
the shopping centre was farmland.

By 2021, the nursing school has been established in the former vacant space
for farming. Similarly, along with the cancer centre, a pharmacy has been
added by adjoining with the hospital in the area where the shopping centre
used to be located. On the contrary, the car park and hospital remain intact.
A Map: Details

In 2041, the main hospital building will remain

unchanged, but the cancer centre is expected to be
expanded to cover the entire original nursing school
area. Meanwhile, the car park will be reduced to
provide the first half of its area to relocate the nursing
school.
EXERCISE
A Diagram: Sample
The diagram illustrates how alumina can be obtained from
bauxite. At the start, the ores of bauxite delivered from a
mine need to be crushed into pieces and then filtered. If
there are some pieces still too large to pass the filter, they
will be separated and retracted to the crusher through the
conveyor belt. In the meantime, the smaller chunks can
enter a digester machine containing acid and water.

Next, dissolved with acid and water, the mixture of the

bauxite is flowed into a precipitator after the residue of the
bauxite, which will be transported to landfills by trucks, is
drawn out. In the precipitator, alumina sediment is
subsequently acquired from the mixture and the excess
water is removed. In order to completely dry out the
moisture and attain a better texture, the sediment is heated
in a rotating kiln, before the refined alumina is obtained in
the final stage of the process.

A Diagram: Overview (I)
 STEPS OR STAGES
“In general, there are (two) main stages in the
process. The first is …. and the second is…”

Example:
“In general, there are two main stages in the
production. The first is a process involving the raw
form of the bauxite and the second is a liquid-based
process as the solid substance is transformed into a
solution.”
A Diagram: Overview (II)
 NATURAL/ MECHANICAL FORCES
“The process involves… (What forces? How do they
interact?)”

Example:
“In general, the process involves a steady system to
produce a particular substance from large mineral
rocks through the utilization of mechanical, chemical,
and thermal means.”
A Diagram: Overview (III)
 PHYSICAL PARTS
“The process is/ involves/ utilizes/ consists of… (What
parts? Can they be grouped? How do they connect/ move/
interact?)”

Example:
“In general, the process is a factory-based and involves a
linear system of conveyors and containers interconnected
to convert bauxite to alumina with water and residue
removal in its mid-phase.”
