Therefore, Ipsative assessment is useful
when the desirable traits of an individual
are to be evaluated. It also helps identify
deception and can bring out high levels of
neuroticism in a participant.

Norm referenced
Assesment
Norm referenced Assessments In
Education
Norm-referenced refers to standardized tests
that assess competency using norms to interpret
and report scores. Rather than using expert
judgment to establish performance standards,
norm-referenced tests use scores from a
representative group of students from across the
country.
Continue......
The scores from this group are converted to
percentiles, usually ranging from the 1st to
the 99th percentile to accurately represent the
full range ability. The full range of
percentiles is divided into smaller ranges to
represent performance levels or benchmarks.
2 Goals of Norm-Referenced
Assessment
Two main goals of norm-referenced
assessment are:

1.To see how a student compares

nationally

2.To track a student’s growth over

time

Part Six
Criterion referenced
Assesment
Criterion-referenced assessment means that
teacher judgements about how a student
does in an assessment task are based on
standards and criteria that are pre-
determined and made available to students
at the time the assignment is set. Standards
are a specified and definite level of
achievement that may be attained.

REFERENCED ASSESSMENTS

1. SCHOOL DRIVING TESTS
These are a great examples of criterion-
referenced tests. They aim to see whether
the examinee has enough skills to receive
a driver’s license. As such, they are not
interested in seeing which test taker is
more skilled than the other.
2. ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS
The advanced placement exams assess high
school students’ knowledge by relying on a
college-level curriculum. People who obtain a
high score on this examination may receive
placement and course credit.
3. NATIONAL ASSESSMENT OF EDUCATIONAL
PROGRESS (NAEP)

For those of you who may not know, this is

the biggest nationally representative
assessment in the U.S. It shows what
students know and
