A brief definition
A brief description of plagiarism is the practice of stealing
another person’s creation (whether that be academic work,
intellectual property, written or spoken words etcetera) and
presenting it as if it belongs to oneself.

Plagiarism occurs in many situations in different


form/types. In this presentation we will be focusing on
plagiarism in music (also know as copyright
infringement). We will give examples as well as solutions
or ways to avoid plagiarism in those cases.

Local:

In 2006, Popular American artist Lil Kim was hit with


a lawsuit being sued by Jamaican sensation Tanya
Stephens. Ms.Stephens accused the rapper of
plagiarism. She claimed that the in artiste’s album
“The Naked Truth” the lyrics of the song “Durty” is a
replica of her single “Mi and Mi God” released in 1997.
Ms.Stephens sued upon the basis that she needs all
stakes in the royalties earned from the song both past
and present and also to be given part rights to the song.

Sizzla Kalanji & The BTS Army

In 2018 the American based group called BTS Army released an


artwork as apart of a album cover.
Jamaican singing sensation Sizzla Kalanji later released an
album titled Millon Times. Shortly after it was released the fans
of the group and the group claimed it was a replica of their
original artwork. Fans went on social media and expressed
dismay of Sizzla’s alleged unauthorized use of the groups
artwork. The discourse was based upon the fact that both album
covers appeared to be almost identical.
