Chapter 1

Aristotle
The Greek philosopher Aristotle (384–322 BC) was one
of the earliest recorded scholars to articulate the theory
of spontaneous generation, the notion that life can arise
from nonliving matter. He was the first one to record his
observation on spontaneous generation. He describe the
formation of maggots from decaying meat and sudden
appearance of rats from stored grains, etc. However, his
concepts were remained unchallenged for more than 350 b.c
2000 years.
Chapter 2

Francesco Redi
Francesco Redi, Italian physician and poet who
demonstrated that the presence of maggots in
putrefying meat does not result from
spontaneous generation but from eggs laid on
the meat by flies. Disproving the spontaneous

generation theory.
Chapter 2

John Needham
had observed micro organism in heated meat
broth , that were not present at the beginning of
the experiment. he concluded that the bacteria
has originated from the meat.

Chapter 4

Lazzaro Spallanzani
Improved Needham's experiment. he
boiled the meat broth and completely
sealed the flask and the micro organism
did not grow. he concluded air has carried
the germs to the broth in Needham's
experiment 1745
Chapter 5
