• Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited popularly known as Jio is India’s
largest telecommunication company, founded by Mukesh Ambani. The company was registered in the year 2007 as Infotel Broadband Services Limited (IBSL) and in the year 2010 Reliance Industries Limited bought a 95% stake in IBSL. After this IBSL was renamed to what we know as now Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited. • India’s first 4G LTE network, Jio began in 2010 as a bet by longtime wireless innovator Reliance Industries that it could help the country compete in what Reliance president Kiran Thomas calls “the fourth industrial revolution, which will be defined by information, data, and AI.” To build a next-gen broadband infrastructure, the company installed more than 100,000 new cell towers, laid some 155,000 miles of fiber, and built 500,000 square feet of cloud data centers. It then created a device, JioFi, to enable existing smartphones to connect to its 4G network via Wi-Fi, and launched its own mobile phone. Most importantly, when Jio debuted in September 2016, it had to persuade Indians “to overcome their fear factor with consuming data.” Jio dropped the price from as much as $60 per gigabyte to less than $1 and gave the service away for free for the first six months. The bet has paid off: In less than 15 months, Jio signed up more than 150 million customers • The business strategy of Reliance Jio is one of the biggest reasons for its success. The use of the AARRR strategy to penetrate the market adds huge growth to the company. This strategy includes 5 key components to help a business acquire and retain customers creatively and cost-effectively BUSINESS MODEL OF RELIANCE JIO The business model is used to determine a company’s plan for generating revenue. It determines the products or services the business plans to sell, its identified target market, and any anticipated expenses. Reliance Jio used a loss-leading strategy which means it sold its products or services at a price lower than the actual price in the market. Reliance Jio initially started giving its users free of cost data and voice calls for a long period of time which helped them gain a large customer base and a higher market share.
