This study asks:

How and why does social context inform the mapping process and the
production of land cover maps?

In this study, the theory of experiential categories is used to shed light on the
(social) construction of classes in an area-class map, and the challenges this
can create when such maps are used as a management tool.

Material

The AR5 database is primarily intended for land use planning and the
management of agriculture and forestry (Bjørdal and Bjørkelo, 2006)
The AR5 classification includes the following classes:
Method.
A number of sources were used to examine the AR5 updating process (see Table 2).
The process in one of the municipalities in Hordaland was investigated closely with
an ethnographic method (Crang and Cook, 2007) .
Results:
The following table, shows the core findings of the
study. They are organized according to the analytical
categories:

• land cover/land use.

• national interests/local interests.
• expert knowledge/local knowledge.
• objectivity and stability/local sensitivity
