■ The Mosel Valley,


is located in west
Germany, along
the Moselle River
is more than 550
km long.
■ The Region is
located about 50°
northern Latitude.
■ The Mosel wine
region has
8.744 ha and
six sub-regions
or districts and
19 collective
vineyards sites.
Mosel wine region has steep Vineyards and
terraced with a slope of over 30 degrees,
some planted at an astounding 70 degree
gradient, and nearly all grapes have to be
picked by hand.
■ The most important soil in the Mosel wine region is the Devonian slate.
■ At the central Mosel one can also find red slate soil around the town.
■ In the upper Mosel we can mainly find limestone Cliff
The History
• Viticulture was brought to this area by the Romans.
• At the 14th century Count Johann IV planted
Riesling for the first time in the nearby town of
Rüsselsheim.
• At the end of the 17th century, the Mosel began to be
identified more with wine made from the Riesling
grape.
• At the 19th century was known as an era of
prosperity for the Mosel wine industry under
Prussian rule.
• Today Mosel wine region is Germany’s fifth largest
wine region.
Climate and Weather
■ The Mosel wine region has cool temperatures, the average annual
temperature lies around 10°C and are very effective in optimizing
the vines' exposure to sun, facilitating the ripening of the grapes,
and during the summer months the weather is warm but rarely hot
with temperatures around 20° C.
■ The Mosel river valley has a mild microclimate for example the
surrounding hills protect the vineyards from cold winds

Sale & Marketing
■ The producers of bottled wine are cooperatives, estates and
commercial wineries. They also bottle and commercialize some
wines from other region like the Pfalz and Rheinhessen
■ the main export markets are north America, united kingdom,
japan and northern Europe.
■ In certain village, they even sell more than 80% of their
production directly to tourists
