Thread Terminology
• Major Diameter: The largest diameter of a screw thread;
measured from the crests on external threads and the roots on
internal threads.

• Minor Diameter: The smaller diameter of a screw thread;

measured from the roots on external threads and the crests on
internal threads.

• Effective Diameter: Diameter of an imaginary coaxial cylinder

intersecting the thread in such a manner that the width of the
thread and space between threads is equal.

• Pitch: Distance between two corresponding points on adjacent

thead forms, measured parallel to the axis in the same axial
plane.
• Lead: Axial distance advanced by the thread in one revolution.
- Lead and pitch are same for a single start thread.
- For a multi start thread, lead is the multiple of pitch
as the number of starts.

• Screw threads are used:

 To hold parts together- act as fasteners (Ex. V-Threads)
 To transmit motion and power (Ex. Square and Acme threads)

• In all of these applications, the screw thread has two main functions:
It converts rotary motion into linear motion.
It prevents linear motion without the corresponding rotation.

• Among all the threads, Square threads are the strongest since they
have more area of contact.
