Sometimes we have to round numbers

What does rounding mean?

Estimation of a number to the nearest 10

 To round off to the nearest 10:


1. Look at the digit in the unit's column.
2. If it is less than 5, round down.
3. If it is more than 5, round up.
4. A number that is halfway between 2 multiples of
ten is usually rounded up.

 Numbers ending in 1, 2, 3 and 4 get rounded down.


 Numbers ending in 5, 6, 7 , 8 and 9 get rounded up.

Estimation of a number to the nearest 100

 To round off to the nearest 100:


1. Look at the digit in tens place.
2. If it is less than 5, round down.
3. If it is 5 or more, round up.

 Numbers ending in 0s, 10s, 20s, 30s and 40s get

 Numbers ending in 50s, 60s, 70s , 80s and 90s get
rounded up
