Transparent Battery (New Technology)

Stanford researchers have invented a transparent lithiumlithium-ion battery that is also highly flexible. It is comparable in cost to regular batteries on the market today, with great potential for applications in consumer electronics.

Properties of the Transparent Battery

The transparent lithium-ion battery is lithiummade up of polydimethylsiloxane which is slightly rubbery compound, and this compound is the one that causes the transparency of the battery.

Properties (Cont.)
ELECTRICAL This transparent lithium-ion battery lithiumis a semi-conductor material since the semirubbery polydimethylsiloxane compound making up the transparency of the battery is low in conductivity.

Properties (Cont.)
MECHANICAL The transparent battery has many mechanical properties since it is composed of different materials inside. 1. The polydimethysiloxane -This material can be considered under the polymers since it has a rubbery, plastic like characteristic.

Properties (Cont.)

2. The Lithium-ion component and LithiumSilicon -The Lithium-ion component, which Lithiumis also made up of graphite and nickelate metals as well as silicon also possess the mechanical properties of metals.

Properties (Cont.)
OPTICAL It is very clear from the name itself that this innovated battery is a transparent one. If something is smaller than 50-100 microns, the eyes 50will feel what it is seeing is transparent. Properties (Cont.)
MAGNETIC - The transparent battery is more likely a ferrimagnetic material. - It has also relatively high magnetic permeability.

Properties (Cont.)
THERMAL Since one of the main components of the transparent battery is the Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a thermoplastic under the polymer classification of materials, this battery is considered having a low-thermal lowresistance.

Product Development
The proposal date of the invention is not indicated. In February 20, 2011, the proposal was passed to Tobin J. Marks for review. The proposal was approved in June 20, 2011. The article about the Transparent Battery is published in July 25, 2011 at Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The Stanford team thinks that in two to four years it can be commercialized.

Possible Applications

It can be a new entry for transparent gadgets It can make the devices, smaller, lighter and compact When more batteries are being stacked together, it stores more energy

Positive Effects
The device is flexible due to its gel component, and so, it can have more potential applications or uses unlike current batteries for sale in the market. The device can aid gadgets in the aesthetic point of view. Since conventional batteries usually make a certain gadget look bulky, the transparency of this battery can make gadgets look more presentable. Energy source from a battery would become more portable because of its thin design.

Negative Effects
Conventional batteries already accompany choking hazards for small children, what more if batteries become transparent? It would not be easily distinguished by children as a battery, and since it is partly made of gel, children would be attracted to place it in their mouth leading to more choking hazards. Since the newly invented battery is transparent, a slight damage in one or more of its components cannot be easily distinguished and it can lead to greater harm. The components cannot be easily segregated or separated from each other because it was made to be transparent. This would lead to another problem in terms of trash.
