In this particular case uncontrolled bleeding is the leading
cause of avoidable death among severely injured individu-
als, the challenge in this intensive care setting is that the
patient is severely traumatized and blood transfusion is
critical to patient outcomes. frequency distribution was
used for qualitative variables and the mean with 95% Cl for
quantitative variables and the most frequently transfused
blood component was red blood cells with 93.3% of total
transfusions versus 43.8% of platelets and 37% of fresh
plasma.
Serious trauma patients cause 5 million deaths annually, the
most expensive treatment in intensive care units (ICU) but it
is estimated that more than 15% of deaths related to serious
traumatic injuries can be prevented. Regarding the control
of this bleeding, different strategies have been shown to be
effective, timely recognition of bleeding and proper man-
agement including blood transfusion are very important to
improve patient outcomes.

The world health organization considers transfusion therapy

as a type of modern health care, inappropriate use or use
that is not in accordance with the protocol should be
avoided, this emphasizes the importance of developing mul-
tidisciplinary protocols to optimize transfusion of blood
components and adequate management of transfusion ther-
apy is a strategy that is challenges for professionals in-
volved in patient care.
its implementation has proven to be effective
in reducing unnecessary blood transfusions
and associated costs and improving patient
safety.
Most of the indications for transfusion are
based on hemoglobin levels, followed by
anemia, found no statistical difference be-
tween the indications for transfusion in poly-
traumatic and non-polytraumatic patients.
Trauma is the situation that most often
causes massive bleeding, in order to maintain
oxygen supply to tissues and restore efficient
coagulation, it is recommended to give cells
In theory,
transfusion can increase oxygen-carrying capac-
ity, in relation to FFP, the main indication for
plasma transfusion is to improve the definition
of coagulation factors, plasma should be trans-
fused as soon as possible after thawing, in addi-
tion, platelet transfusion is an additional rec-
ommended action for critical bleeding, transfu-
sion practices do not vary depending on the
type of patient
