• THE FAMILY COURT ACT, 1984
• The Act provides for establishment of family courts for encouraging
conciliation and ensuring speedy settlement of disputes relating to
matrimonial and family affairs, as well as matters related thereto, by
taking a different approach than ordinary civil proceedings.
• The enactment of this Act is the result of report of Law Commission,
and the hard work of different women’s associations and NGOs. 59th
Law Commission Report in 1974 suggested for the establishment of
family courts by States and selection of Judicial Officers should be
based on experience. Also, in the year 1975, the Committee on Status
of Women suggested that family disputes should be dealt with
differently than ordinary civil proceedings.
• PREAMBLE: An Act to provide for establishment of Family Courts with
a view to promote conciliation and secure speedy settlement of
disputes relating to marriage and family affairs and for matters
connected therewith.
