CALCIUM

Maša Županić, Vida Kos 2.d

WHAT IS CALCIUM?
calcium is a soft, silver-white,
alkaline earth metal that is not
found in nature in its elemental
state due to its high reactivity

WHAT DO WE NEED
CALCIUM FOR?
Calcium is a mineral most often
associated with healthy bones and
teeth, although it also plays an
important role in blood clotting,
helping muscles to contract, and
regulating normal heart rhythms
and nerve functions.
CALCIUM
REACTIONS
Calcium reacts with oxygen, water and hydrochloric acid:

2Ca(s) + O2(g) → 2CaO(s)  Calcium oxide

Ca(s) + 2H2O(l)→Ca (OH)2 (aq) + H2(g)  Calcium hydroxide

Ca(s) + 2HCl(aq) → CaCl2(aq) + H2(g)  Hydrogen gas

LIME

-The basic raw material for obtaining quicklime, CaO and

slaked lime, Ca(OH)2, is calcium carbonate.

-Quicklime and slaked lime are very important for

construction. Plaster is a mixture of slaked lime, water
and sand.
CaCO3
CALCIUM
CARBONATE
-the most important compound of calcium.

-insoluble in pure water, but dissolves in natural water

with dissolved carbon(IV) oxide.

-This process is long-lasting and with the release of

heat, soluble calcium hydrogen carbonate is formed.
By raising the temperature, carbon(IV) oxide and water vapor are
released and insoluble calcium carbonate is formed again. That is how
stalagmites form on the ground of caves, and stalactites from the
ceiling.
