INTRODUCTION ON
HIMALAYAN MOUNTAINS

 The Himalayas are a mountain range , separating the plains of


the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau .
The Himalayas form a physical barrier between the INDIAN
subcontinent and the central and the east ASIAN countries .
 The HIMALAYAS are young and fold mountains.
 They are spread over a distance of nearly 2400 km and form an
arc their width varies from 400 km in KASHMIR to 150 km in
ARUNACHAL PRADESH .

The SHIWALIKS
MOUNTAINS
• Shiwalik Range, also called Shiwalik Hills or Outer Himalayas,
Siwalik also spelled SHIWALIKS, sub-Himalayan range of the
northern Indian subcontinent.
• The southernmost range of the Himalayan system is known as
SHIWALIKS hills.
•  The average altitude of the SHIWALIKS Ranges varies between
900 to 1100m. 
• The area between SHIWALIKS and the lesser Himalayas consist
of a number of valleys.
•  These valleys are more or less parallel to the ranges and are
known as Duns.

Punjab Himalayas

• Between the Indus and the SATLUJ rivers [560 km long].


• All the major rivers of Indus river system flow through Punjab
Himalayas.
• A large portion of Punjab Himalayas is in Jammu and Kashmir
and Himachal Pradesh.
• Karakoram, Ladakh, Pir PANJAL, Zaskar and DHAOLA,
Dhar are the major ranges in this section.

• The mountains run eastward for 450 miles (720 km) from the
upper Tista River in the west to the great southward bend of
the Brahmaputra River IN EAST
• Important peaks include Kula, Chomo, and Kangto; the highest
is Namjagbarwa (25,445 feet [7,756 metres]) in Tibet.

Manipur, Mizo, and Naga Hills.

iii. These mountains are included in the states of Assam,


Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland,
Meghalaya and Mizoram.
KASHMIR
HIMALAYAS
• The Kashmir or North-Western Himalayas is a
mountainous grassland and shrubland ecoregion found in the
heights of Kashmir or the northwestern part of Indian
Himalayas. 
• Between the Greater Himalayas and the Karakoram ranges,
the northeastern half of the Kashmir Himalayas is a frigid
desert.
• This region also has important South Asian glaciers such as
the Baltoro and Siachen.
