CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study is to provide answers to the following questions:

1. What is the effect of adding geotextile material in the improvised filtration

model in purifying harvested rainwater?
2. What is the difference in the results for the physicochemical tests of the
filtered rainwater from the two models when compared with the National
Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW)
3. Is there a significant difference from between the results of the test of the
filtered rainwater using sand filtration model with and without the non-
woven geotextile material?
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

This study shall assess the viability of drinking filtered

GENERAL OBJECTIVE
water passing through an improvised rainwater filtration
model with geotextile filters from harvested rainwater.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

More specifically, this study aims to:

1. Determine
SPECIFIC the physical and chemical characteristics of harvested rainwater and the filtered
OBJECTIVES
water in terms of the parameters, such as turbidity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, Water
Hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, and Chloride.
2. Assess whether or not these physical and chemical parameters would meet the Philippines
National Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW) standards for the local residents of
Zamboanga City to apply.
3. Determine the significance of utilizing the improvised filtration model with geotextile material
from the improvised filtration model without geotextile.
4. To be able to determine the appropriate materials for the improvised filtration model capable
enough to purify rainwater for drinking.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS,
CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
Finding #1: Based on comparisons between unfiltered rainwater and
samples that made it through model A, it was found in the results that using a
non-woven geotextile material can change the selected physicochemical
properties of the rainwater.
Finding #2: When the results of the two improvised model units A
with non-woven geotextile filters and model B without geotextile filters
were compared, it was discovered that samples from model A (A2 & A3)
have yielded a passing result in accordance to the allowable limits set by
the PNSDW, contrary to the samples from model B, which resulted a very
turbid samples, thus is has failed the maximum limit set by the PNSWD.
This was discovered by comparing the results of the two models A and B.
Finding #3: Using Single Factor ANOVA, the result shows that there
is a significant difference in incorporating a non-woven geotextile filter to
a sand model unit in terms of the turbidity, TDS and total hardness.
CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
RECOMMENDATIONS
1. A study is to be conducted by thickening the layer of geotextile filters. This
suggestion endeavor aims to see if turbidity levels in rainwater samples
would satisfy the PNSDW and, thus, if it is safe for human consumption.

2. A study is to be conducted by adding a material or treatment specifically

for pH level. This is to reduce the pH level more to a neutral level.

3. A study is to be conducted by adding more samples or trials. This

suggestion is to better appreciate the difference and pattern of changes
between the two model units
