Protection of Feeder circuit
* Over current protection and Short circuit protection for a feeder circuit generally depends
on the molded case circuit breaker which is called MCCB.
* Breaking capacity of MCCB must be greater than the prospected short circuit current
at a point where the MCCB is installed.
* There are two protection systems. One is selective tripping and another one is Back up
protection

A) SELECTIVE TRIPPING SYSTEM WHICH IS APPLIED FOR ESSENTIAL

AND IMPORTANT FEEDERS.

•If short circuit happens at point A, only MCCB-D1

should trip and ACB-U should withstand without
trip against thermal stress due to short circuit
SHORT CIRCUIT POINT current until MCCB-D1 has interrupted short
A circuit current.
ACB-U MCCB-D1 • The MCCB-D1 should have enough breaking
Busbar capacity and break short circuit current by
MCCB-D1 itself.
IS MCCB-D2 To consumer •In case of this system, total black out due to trip of
up
MCCB-D3 stream breaker can be avoided.
Protection of Feeder circuit
B) BACK UP PROTECTION SYSTEM WHICH IS APPLIED FOR NON ESSENTIAL
AND NON IMPORTANT FEEDERS.

SHORT CIRCUIT POINT

• Where interrupting capacity of the MCCB-D1 is
A
shortage against short circuit current at point A,
MCCB-U MCCB-D1 if short circuit happens at point A,
Busbar
both MCCB-U and MCCB-D1 should trip
IS MCCB-D2 To consumer at the same time.
Then, MCCB-D1 can satisfactorily interrupt
MCCB-D3
short circuit current which is greater than
own breaking capacity.
For example, if MCCB type XS100NB and XS50NB are backed up
•This means that the MCCB-D1 is backed up
by MCCB type TL-100F, they can be used at a point on which short
by MCCB-U.
circuit current is greater than their breaking capacity as follows.

3. Outline of ESB
 The role of ESB.
 Electrical Equipment supplied from
ESB.
 Emergency generator automatic start
and stop change over system with
main generator.
 Black out test.
1. The role of ESB
* Emergency switchboard is the switchboard that is doing supply, watching
status, control and protection of emergency electric power.
Normally Emergency switchboard receive the power from Main
switchboard,
but when the main power is shut down, the signal which automatically
activate the emergency Gen to run comes out and after Emergency Gen is
built up, the power was changed over to emergency power.
   Emergency switchboard has these circuit which control automatically
these operation in it.

* Generally Emergency switchboards consist of Emergency Gen panel and

feeder panel. Circuit of watching status and protection of Emergency
Gen and feeder circuit are included in Emergency switchboards.
And also following circuit is included.
1. Circuit of Power receiving from Main switchboards
2. Circuit of Emergency Gen. start signal and circuit of its start-test signal
3. Select circuit of main power and emergency power.
   4. Shore connection circuit
2. Electrical Equipment supplied from ESB :

Following feeder must be equipped in Emergency Switchboards and the power must be
recovered within 45secs when blackout occurs.

* Communication equipment / device

* Navigation equipment
* Steering gear equipment (Auto Pilot/ Gyro)
* Emergency lighting
* Fire fighting equipment

* Emergency Fire Pump

EMERGENCY GENE. (M/S)

1. In normal condition, main power is fed to the emergency switchboard

through MCCB-MB and MCCB-EB.
2. If main power fails and MCCB-EB trips, the emergency generator starts
and after voltage build up, the EG ACB is closed automatically.
3, If main power restores, the EG ACB trips and the MCCB-EB is automatically closed.

* Refer to separate flow chart sheet.
