CALCIPORE 160 T AL IN

PE EXTRUSION COATING
OF PAPER &
PAPERBOARD
OBJECTIVE:
to cut down the cost of paper & paperboard
extrusion coating

 HOW: by using CALCIPORE 160T AL

masterbatches
FEATURES of CALCIPORE® 160T AL mb:
 Increase adhesion to paper, paperboard and
aluminium foil:

 The increased thermal conductivity of the polymer

melt filled with CALCIPORE 160T AL allows faster
heat transfer from the bulk of the web to the polymer
/substrate interface.

 This allows the polymer to stay molten and improves

the wetting of the polymer onto the substrate
surface.
FEATURES of CALCIPORE® 160T AL mb:

 Line speed is increased (see tables below)

 MVTR is reduced:
 With 0% CALCIPORE 160T AL: 1.30 g/sq inch/day
 With 30% CALCIPORE 160T AL: 0.85 g/sq inch/day

 COF (Coefficient of Friction) between the

polymer coated surfaces is reduced:
 COF (poly-to-poly) primer coated: 0.36
 COF (poly-to-poly) 30% CALCIPORE 160T AL: 0.27
 (note: values refer to kinetic measurements)
FEATURES of CALCIPORE® 160T AL mb:
 Printing, laminating and antiblocking
characteristics are improved.
 Coating thickness is reduced:
 For instance: adding 20% of CALCIORE 160T AL
COMPOUND coating thickness was reduced from 15 to
12 microns.
 PE consumption can also be reduced:
20% in weight = 0.920/1.84 = 10% in volume of LDPE
and assuming 1300€/ton -raw material cost- the
savings are: 0.10 x 1300= 130 €/ton.
FEATURES of CALCIPORE® 160T AL mb:
 Increase adhesion to paper, paperboard and
aluminium foil- Corona treatment not necessary-
 Line speed is increased.
 MVTR is reduced.
 COF (Coefficient of Friction) between the
polymer coated surfaces is reduced
 This is of value to flexible package converters and
end users
 Printing, laminating and anti-blocking
characteristics are improved.
 Coating thickness is reduced
