3RD DIVISION NUCLEAR BIOLOGY CHEMICAL DEFENCE

CHEMICAL RECONNAISSANCE AND SURVEY

OBJECTIVES
To be able to state the principles of a chemical reconnaissance and chemical surveillance. To be able to state the methods of conducting a chemical reconnaissance and chemical surveillance.

CHEMICAL RECCE
Definition:- A mission undertaken to identify routes and areas which are free from chemical hazards.

PRINCIPLES
Chemical Recce is usually one element of a recce activity. Minimum number of personnel should be exposed to hazards. All available detection and monitoring equipment should be used.

METHODS OF CONDUCTING RECCES

Vehicle On foot

TASKS
To identify routes and areas free from vapour and contact hazards. To identify routes and areas free from a contact hazard but with an acceptable vapour hazard.

COMMANDERS DECISION
It will be unacceptable for the units to move through or into liquid/solid contaminated areas. However, commanders may decide that it is acceptable to move through/into a vapour hazard. This decision must be clearly understood by the chemical recce team.

USE OF CAM
Solely relying on detector paper will be a long and laborious procedure. Therefore greater reliance should be placed on CAM, this should speed up procedures. Drills using detector paper would be conducted only when CAM indicates the presence of vapour.

ACTION ON IDENTIFYING A VAPOUR HAZARD

INITIAL ACTION
(REACTION TO VAPOUR READINGS)
Mask up! Conduct a liquid check using detector paper, if liquid is detected, terminate the recce. If CAM bar readings are below those specified by the sub-unit commander as acceptable, then carry out the detailed procedure. If CAM bar readings are above those specified by the sub-unit commander as acceptable, then terminate the recce.

ACTION ON IDENTIFYING A VAPOUR HAZARD

SUBSEQUENT ACTION
If for tactical reasons it was not possible to carry out the Initial Action, then an RVD check should be conducted at the downwind end of the area as a final check against any agents undetected by CAM. Report results of task.
