What is a Database Administrator?
Database administrator (DBA) is a person or group in charge of implementing DBMS in an
organization. The DBA job requires a high degree of technical expertise. DBA consists of a team
of people rather than just one person.
The primary role of Database administrator is as follows −
• Database design
• Performance issues
• Database accessibility
• Capacity issues
• Data replication
• Table Maintenance

2
Responsibilities of DBA

• The responsibilities of DBA are as follows −

• Makes the decision concerning the content of the database.
• Plans the storage structure and access strategy.
• Provides the support to the users.
• Defines the security and integrity checks.
• Interpreter backup and recovery strategies.
• Monitoring the performance and responding to the changes
in the requirements.

3
Skills required for DBA

• The skills required to be a successful DBA are as follows −

• Database designing.
• Knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL).
• Know about distributed architecture.
• Knowledge on different operating servers.
• Idea on Relational Database Management System
(RDBMS).
• Ready to face challenges and solve the problems quickly.

Types of DBA
• Administrative DBA: The administrative DBA is the particular computer system administrator
which works to support and retains the functionality of the database, also have to provide security to
data, take back-up of it, and copy the data.
• Data Warehouse DBA: The job of the data warehouse DBA is to gather data from different origins
into the data warehouse, and planning of the warehouse and cleansing of data for early loading is
also handled by them.
• Development DBA: Development DBA has to work as a programmer because they have to
construct and expand the queries and stored procedures to meet the customer requirement.
• Application DBA: The application DBA plays an important role to carry on all the requirements of
the application, which can be used for installing, updating in the database, and they work for the
installation of new applications and to troubleshoot the issues for resolution and improve the
performance with it.
• Architect: The architect DBA have to plan the structure which reaches the customer demand, and
developers can use that plan to build the actual application.
• OLAP DBA: OLAP is a multidimensional analytic engine, and the OLAP DBA plan and constructs
the multi-dimensional cubes to support it for the resolution purpose.
• Data Modeller: The data modeller accomplish the data modeling for specific requirement of the
business. They have visual responsibilities that gather and construct data requirements into a logical
model.

Functions of Data Administrator in DBMS
• The fundamental role of the data administrator in DBMS is to support, apply
or execute, control, retrieve, and regress or optimize the database for an
organization.
• In an organization, the database administrator needs to work with the
application developers and managing of the database, so in such a situation,
they must have to play the consultative role, also they require to stay updated
about the new technologies of the database, the particular center of attention
for the data administrator is at the side of business not at the technologies
which we can say it is the main function of the data administrator.
• The data administrators or DBAs are able to construct a business data model
by using analytics. Then, that data model is established on the data to build the
function of the business. After that, they try to create the databases.
• Finally, the function of the system administrator is to set up, configure, and
install the database. They can also sustain the operating system to resettle to
the updated version.
