Lack of public awareness Misconceptions and myths Spurious probiotic products with false health claims in the market Confusion over the credibility of probiotic products due to exaggerated health claims Absence of regulatory standards for quality control of probiotics Communication gap between the researchers, medical professionals, food technologists, nutritionists, industry and the consumers Necessity for a common platform to bring all the stakeholders together to derive full health benefits of probiotic interventions

NDRIs initiatives in this direction


Organizing effort was spearheaded by NDRI Identification of a National core group on probiotics in the country 1st meeting of the core group held on 5th March, 2010 at NDRI, Karnal with main focus on bringing together all the R&D scientists, professionals and stakeholders from different parts of the country associated with probiotic research & development. 2nd meeting of the core group held on 15th Nov., 2010 at NASC complex, New Delhi with main thrust on the role of industry in supporting probiotic research specifically oriented towards product development based on ethnic dairy foods to manage health care and well being of the Indian population. As a follow up of these meetings, NDRI was entrusted the responsibility of getting the National core group on probiotics as a registered society to make it more vibrant

To bring together researchers, academia, scientists, industry personnel, food companies, pharmaceutical companies and medical professionals who have an interest in the area of Probiotics Major goal is to provide a unique forum for the exchange of research and latest know how in the area of probiotics and new product development.

To achieve recognition as credible Think-Tank providing views on policy issues related to probitics/probiotic products for health applications which interalia would be a powerful instrument in fostering a vibrant dairy based probiotic industry in the country vis a vis the growth of national economy

To play a meaningful role in building a healthy society through probiotic interventions

Aims and objectives


To develop a network of scientists in the area of Probiotics/probitic foods To initiate, develop, promote, and coordinate research, training and out reach programes in the areas of probiotics for better health and well -being of the people. To promote collaborative research in development of probiotics by fostering and maintaining research links with scientists of similar interest all over the world. To organize conferences, workshops, seminars, symposia, training programs, etc in the area of probiotics. To develop and maintain a data base on probiotics, food scientists & nutritionists, food industries, research institutes, and training institutions interested in probiotics. To collect and disseminate knowledge on probiotics and collaborate with food industries, academic institutions, government/non-governmental organizations for their promotion. To honor the scientists, social workers or organizations promoting the development and usage of probiotics and carryout social and welfare activities for the members of association. To encourage and publish valuable literature e.g proceedings, journals, memoirs and other publications relating to scientific & technological R&D in probiotics as may be found desirable by the Academy and to represent internationally the researches done in the country To secure and administer funds, grants and endowments for the furtherance of scientific & technological researches in Dairy Science
