7. Stereotyping/Generalizing:
Judging someone on the basis of one’s perception
of the group to which that person belongs on the
basis of ethnicity, religion, region, profession,
culture, nationality etc– a prevalent and often
useful, if not always accurate, generalization

Perception problems
• A perceptual error is the inability to judge humans, things
or situations fairly and accurately. Things like-- partiality,
prejudice, stereotyping, which have always caused
human beings to err in different aspects of their lives.
Here are some points referring to one's mistake in
perceiving people:
(a) Over-generalizing: Drawing conclusions based on
limited evidence
(b) Labeling: Labeling oneself based on some action one
has taken

• (c) Catastrophizing: Assigning a high likelihood
to the worst-possible outcome
(d) Filtering: Filtering out the positive and
focusing on the negative
(e) Jumping to conclusions: Mind-reading and
fortune-telling
(f) Personalizing: Assuming that negative events
are one's fault
(g) Making “should statements”: Focusing on
what one should do/have done

• (h) Emotional reasoning: Assuming that one's
feelings are strong evidence
(i) Dismissing the positive: Ignoring the positives
or turning them into negatives
(j) Dichotomous thinking (Either-Or): Thinking in
black-and-white or right-or-wrong
