BACKGROUND INFORMATION

• People began to explore the world

• Earth shrank as everything became discovered
• The next place of interest was space
• Space can never be conquered because of its vastness, time barrier, and
quality of seclusion
WHAT IS SPACE EXPLORATION?

• Space exploration is using technology to discover and learn more about our solar system, galaxy, stars,
planets, and the cosmos.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF SPACE EXPLORATION

• In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first satellites, Sputnik, and Sputnik 2, which contained a dog
named Laika, to see if an animal could survive the launch into space, however, Laika died when the
satellite was a week into orbit.
• In 1958 the first U.S. satellite, Explorer was launched.
• In 1961, the Soviet Union, and U.S. launched satellites with the first Humans into space.
• In 1968, the Soviet Union and U.S. launched the first manned spacecrafts to orbit the moon,
and return to Earth.
• In 1969, the first men, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin.
• in 1973, the U.S. Launched its first space station, Skylab.
• In 1977, NASA launched two spacecrafts; Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 to the outer reaches of our
solar system, to look for signs of life.
• In 1981, the U.S. Launched the first space shuttle, Colombia to orbit Earth.
• In 1990, the U.S. Launched the Hubble Space Telescope
WHY SHOULD WE CONTINUE TO EXPLORE
SPACE AND FUND SPACE EXPLORATIONS?

• The human endeavors have landed a man on the moon. The Apollo missions started in 1969 and ended in
1973, with a total of 12 astronauts landing on the moon. It was the 1st time any human has left the Earth,
landed on the moon, and retrieved materials on n extraterrestrial planet; the moon. We have endless
questions about the moon and our knowledge has not been satisfied, as humans endeavor to return to the
moon someday to answer those questions.
CONCLUSION

• We should continue to explore space, because it brings about great discoveries. Technology is what got
man to orbit the Earth and then eventually to get to the moon and back. The technology that was
invented during the moon program, brought many new inventions, products, and materials to society.
Some inventions that were inspired from space travel, was the thermal blanket, and modern, portable
vacuum cleaners. If we continue space exploration, it may lead to inspirations to new inventions.
