FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN SELECTING YOUR TOPIC

 1. you need to know where topics come from.

 2. You need to know what kind of topics are acceptable for your research.
SOURCES OF RESEARCH TOPIC

 1. Ask your teacher, other students who have taken a research course before, or researchers that happen to talk with.

 2. think about things you are curious about

 3. Observe some problems that people are facing in your social community.

 4. Read newspapers and see what are the problems people are complaining about.

 5. Read some research articles that have been published before and see at the end of the article what the authors
recommend as needed additional research.
 6. Read the research projects that other students wrote at your school and see what else needs to be done about their
topics.
 7. Attend conferences or seminars and see what other researchers are working on and what areas they are not addressing.
TYPES OF RESEARCH TOPICS

 1. LOCAL, REGIONAL, NATIONAL, AND INTERNATIONSL TOPICS

 2. THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL TOPICS

CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH TOPIC

 A TOPIC THAT YOU LIKE

 A TOPIC THAT OTHER PEOPLE LIKE

 A TOPIC THAT ISDOABLE

 A TOPIC THAT IS CURRENT

 A TOPIC THAT IS RELEVANT TO YOUR FIELD OF SPECIALIZATION

WRITING THE BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

 Placing your research topic within a bigger context.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
TOPIC: EFFECTIVE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

 Education plays an important role in life at the personal, local, national, and international levels (Blaumm, 2017). A country without education is usually a country
without a future (Rodriguez, 2015). The United Nations (2010) stipulates that access to primary education is a human right. This may explain why education is
probably one of the most common activities of children all around the world. Due to the major role education plays in the life of children, parents are expected to be
involved in their children’s education.
WRITING THE PROBLEM STATEMENT

 Is that one or few paragraphs that pinpoint the exact problem that you plan to focus on.

 It must be directly linked to your topic and to your purpose statement.

 It also starts with a general background and ends with one or more sentences that state clearly what the problem is.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
TOPIC: EFFECTIVE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL
ACTIVITIES.

 The importance of education is evident in daily life. To get a job, someone must show that he or she has learned the required skills pertaining to that job. To go to college
or university, the new student must show that he or she has already completed senior high studies. Not getting an education can easily cripple someone’s future. Any
responsible parents feel it his or her duty to send children to school from the young age. More support is even expected from parents because they need to help with their
children's assignments. Although Salazar (2016) states that children do well at school if their parents regularly help them, many parents at the school explored in this
research study hardly help their children. No research study has been conducted at the selected school to know exactly why parents of these children are not involved in their
children’s school work.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

 You need to state in one to three sentences why you want to conduct your research study.

 Your purpose should directly be focused on addressing the research problem.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
TOPIC: EFFECTIVE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

 The role of parents in their children’s academic success is so important that, ignoring it can lead to some risks for their
children (Santiago, 2017). Parents need to understand this role and be guided in how to support their children’s academic
journey. The purpose of this study is to explore the reasons why many parents do not help their children in their school
work. Additionally, based on what is found in this study, recommendations will be made that can help parents be more
involved in their children’s school activities.
STATING THE RESEARCH QUESTIONS

 Are sentences stated in the interrogative form; meaning, they end with a question mark.

 They somehow help give a clear direction of the research study.

 When you put them together, they should help you address the major research problem that you have chosen.
POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN WRITING RESEARCH QUESTIONS

 Each question should be unique

 You should have 3 to 5 research questions.

 At least one question (preferably the last one) should help address the selected problem.

 All the research questions should be written clearly and concisely

 All the research questions should be written in the third person, not the first person or second person.
PURPOSE STATEMENT
TOPIC: EFFECTIVE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL
ACTIVITIES

 What role does parents’ involvement in their children’s school activities play in the children’s academic success?

 Why are many parents not actively engaged in their children’s school activities?

 What impact does this lack of involvement have on their children’s education?

 What practical strategies can be used to get parents more involved in their children’s school activities?
DISCUSSING THE SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH

 You put boundaries around your planned research. (DELIMITATIONS)

 You need to present a clear picture where your research study will take place and what will be included and not included.
SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH
TOPIC: EFFECTIVE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL
ACTIVITIES

 This research study will focus specifically on one public school located in one major city in the province of Cavite.
The city has 52 public schools. The researchers have selected this school because it is in the school province where the
they live and it has been reported to have many issues related to parents’ lack of involvement in their children’s school
activities. All other public schools are not included because including them would be a monumental task that cannot be
completed in the time allotted for this research. Private schools are not included because they all follow different
programs and run under different a philosophy of education, while public schools are expected to follow same curriculum
and implement the same philosophy of education.
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

 Are the expected weaknesses or shortcomings of the study.

 When you state your limitations clearly, you actually strengthen your research study.

 For each limitation, it is important to briefly state why you will not be (or were not) able to do what you know should be
done (or should have been done).
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
TOPIC: EFFECTIVE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

 It could be important for this study to compare the results of the public school with the results from a private school.
However, due to the time limitation, I will not be able to include to include any private school. They are the ones who
can provide the best information about their problem. Teachers could also provide some good insight, but they will not be
included because I decided to focus on the parents. Although students may also have some input, they will not be
included because they may not know exactly what their parents go through when these children are at school.
STATING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

 You need to show how your study will improve people’s lives , their work, their behavior.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
TOPIC: EFFECTIVE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL
ACTIVITIES

 The findings of this research study are important in three main ways. First, for the first time, the study will reveal why
many parents are not involved actively in their children’s school activities. Second, the findings will help generate
practical ways to get parents more involved in their children’s academic life. Last, the findings could help could help
develop some practical solutions to help parents cope better with their responsibilities and their time management.
WRITING THE TITLE OF THE RESEARCH STUDY

 The topic is the main idea of your research study. It is not your actual title.

 More specific that your topic.

 The topic is a bug umbrella under which you find your title.

 Your title must have the major concept(s) of your topic, the context, and idea about the participants, and an idea about
your research design,
KEEP THE FOLLOWING IN MIND WHEN WRITING YOUR TITLE:

 Include the major key concepts of your topic, an idea about the participants, the context, and an idea about the research
design.
 Keep it to 10-15 words only

 You can use a colon (:) to divide the title into two parts.

 Don’t use a sentence form, a period or question mark at the end.

 Don’t use the actual names of people or location of your study; this is an unethical practice.
