INSTRUMENTS OF THE CLASSICAL PERIOD

MODERN FLUTE

- Flute Artifacts made of bone

- Simple wooden flutes with six holes were used throughout
Middle Ages and Renaissance period in military and folk
music.
- Share the same note fingerings, however there are
differences in the amount of breath.
CLARINET
- Comprise a family of instruments of differing sizes
and pitches.

- The clarinet family is the largest such woodwind

family, with more than a dozen types.

- It is a standard fixture of the orchestra and concert

band.
- Today the clarinet is used in classical
music, military bands, klezmer, jazz, and other
styles.
FRENCH HORN
The French horn is a brass instrument made of tubing wrapped into
a coil with a flared bell.

Is a standard instrument used in a symphony orchestra. Usually made up of four to five players,
the Horn section sits in the orchestra’s back row and adds color to the ensemble, and is
associated with heroic themes to the music.
VALVED TRUMPET
Maintains the traditional trumpet bore, cylindrical with a terminal bell flare,
though usually the bore tapers toward the mouthpiece to provide additional
flexibility of tone.

This is a cylinder that is pushed down to

change pitch, with a spring to quickly
return it to its ‘up’ position when released.

A valve is a device that changes the path taken by the

trumpeter’s breath.
Trumpets are used in art music styles, for instance in orchestras, concert
bands, and jazz ensembles, as well as in popular music.
TROMBONE
As with all brass instruments, sound is produced when the player’s
vibrating lips cause the air column inside the instrument to vibrate.
It is similar to a large trumpet, except the player pushes and pulls
on its slide to change the length of the tube.
The trombone is the loudest instrument in the symphony orchestra.
Together with vibrations from the player’s lips, the trombone
can play a wide range of notes. It sounds deeper than a trumpet
and is usually said to be one of the bass clef instruments.
PERCUSSION FAMILY
Percussion instruments are any instruments that make a sound when struck, shaken,
or scraped. The percussion family is the largest family in an orchestra.
PIANO The piano overtook the harpsichord and organ as the primary
keyboard instrument.
The first true piano was invented almost
entirely by one man—Bartolomeo Cristofori
(1655–1731) of Padua, who had been
appointed in 1688 to the Florentine court of
Grand Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici to care
for its harpsichords and eventually for its
entire collection of musical instruments.
It can sustain pitches in a lyrical fashion,
creating all musical styles and moods, with
enough volume to be heard through almost
any musical ensemble.
