Why Skill-related Fitness Is
Important
Achieving good levels of skill-related
fitness can help you perform in a variety of
sports.
Each sport requires different combinations
of fitness components. Training to
improve these components is very
specific.
Unless you are a highly trained athlete, it
is not likely that you will achieve a high
level in all skill-related components.

Knowing your skill level can help you
select a sport or lifetime activity best
suited to your skills.
Remember: You can achieve a high level
of physical fitness without being highly
successful in skill-related fitness.

Coordination – the
ability to use the
senses to produce
smooth and accurate
movements.
Examples: golf,
tennis, football,
baseball & basketball

Specific Training
The key to effective practice sessions is to
work on specific skills.
In addition to performing the skill itself,
your practice should include drills specific
to the skill.
Evaluating Skill-related Fitness
Coordination – Alternate hand wall toss
Agility – Zigzag run
Speed – 50 yard dash
Power – Standing long jump
Equilibrium (Balance) – One foot stand
Reaction Time – Yardstick test
