Why Skill-related Fitness Is
Important
 Achieving good levels of skill-related
fitness can help you perform in a variety of
sports.
 Each sport requires different combinations
of fitness components. Training to
improve these components is very
specific.
 Unless you are a highly trained athlete, it
is not likely that you will achieve a high
level in all skill-related components.
Why Skill-related Fitness Is
Important
 Knowing your skill level can help you
select a sport or lifetime activity best
suited to your skills.
 Remember: You can achieve a high level
of physical fitness without being highly
successful in skill-related fitness.

 Coordination – the
ability to use the
senses to produce
smooth and accurate
movements.
 Examples: golf,
tennis, football,
baseball & basketball

body while changing
direction.
 Examples: soccer,

inherited characteristics
 Other people seem to find a way to
achieve in spite of natural ability through
determination, desire and “heart”.

 Learning a skill takes practice.
 Even if you are already polished at a skill,
practice will lead to even greater success.

 The key to effective practice sessions is to
work on specific skills.
 In addition to performing the skill itself,
your practice should include drills specific
to the skill.

 Speed – 50 yard dash
 Power – Standing long jump
 Equilibrium (Balance) – One foot stand
 Reaction Time – Yardstick test
