ETYMOLOGY
● The name Mary was derived from the ancient
Hebrew name Miriam. Miriam was the name
of Moses' sister in the Old Testament of the
Bible. This name may have come from a root
meaning “beloved,” or from a word meaning
“bitter” or “rebellious,” a reference to the
biblical Miriam's life as a slave in Egypt.

● Etymology. From Middle English Marie,

from Old French Marie, from Latin Maria,
from Ancient Greek Μαρία (María), Μαριάμ
(Mariám), from Aramaic ‫( מַ ְרי ָם‬maryām) or
Hebrew ‫( מִ ְרי ָם‬miryām), of uncertain meaning.
Most likely originally an Egyptian name,
perhaps derived in part from mry "beloved"
or mr "love".
MARIOLOGY
Mariology, in Christian,
especially Roman Catholic,
theology, the study of
doctrines concerning Mary,
the mother of Jesus; the term
also refers to the content of
these doctrines.
ORIGIN OF MARY
The earliest New Testament account and appearance of Mary is in the
epistle to the Galatians, which was written before the gospels. She is
referred to as "a woman" and is not named: "But when the fullness of
time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law"
(Galatians 4:4). Mary, also called St. Mary or the Virgin Mary,
(flourished beginning of the Christian era), the mother of Jesus,
venerated in the Christian church since the apostolic age and a favourite
subject in Western art, music, and literature. Mary is known from
biblical references, which are, however, too sparse to construct a
coherent biography. The development of the doctrine of Mary can be
traced through titles that have been ascribed to her in the history of the
Christian communions—guarantee of the Incarnation, virgin mother,
second Eve, mother of God, ever virgin, immaculate, and assumed into
heaven. She has a number of feast days in various Christian traditions,
several of which are holy days of obligation for Roman Catholics.
Mary, also called St. Mary or the Virgin Mary A young virgin who was chosen by
God to conceive Jesus through the Holy Spirit, second Eve, mother of God, ever
virgin, immaculate, and assumed into heaven. Mary was visited by an angel as a
young woman, while she was engaged to be married to Joseph, a Jewish carpenter
and also a descendant of Abraham. The angel told her that she had found favour with
God and would give birth to his son, who would be called Jesus.
HISTORY OF MARY
On 18 BC, when Galilee was a part of the old Roman
Empire, Mary was born there to a religious Jewish
family in what is now Israel. Saint Joachim and Saint
Anne were her parents; according to Catholic belief,
they each had a separate visit from an angel
informing them that Anne was expecting Mary. When
Mary was three years old, her parents placed her
under the wing of God at a Jewish temple.

According to history, Mary was engaged to Joseph, a

pious Jewish man, by the time she was 12 or 13 years
old. The plans God had for Mary to serve as Jesus
Christ's mother on Earth were revealed to her during
her engagement by an angelic visitation. Despite the
obstacles in her personal life, Mary faithfully obeyed
God's plan.

THEOTOKOS
Did you know?

Theodoret (393-457 AD) an influential

author, theologian and early Christian
bishop from Cyrrhus, Syria wrote in 436
that calling the Virgin Mary Theotokos is
an apostolic tradition.
 COUNCIL AND YEAR

Theotokos was formally sanctioned by the Ecumenical

Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. The Church declared that
both Divine and human natured were united in the person of
Jesus, the son of Mary.

 FEAST DAY

The Feast of the Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady, the

Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary is celebrated on September
8 each year. The Feast commemorates the birth of the
Mother of Jesus Christ, our Lord. The Feast commemorates
the birth of the Mother of Jesus Christ, our Lord. The birth of
Mary was a major turning point in the history of humanity. It
marks the time when our enslavement to sin and death was
passing away. This little baby girl born to aged parents,
Joachim and Anna, began a sequence of historical events that
opened the Gates of Paradise, bringing about the union of
Heaven and Earth, God and humanity
 WHAT IS THE DOGMA ALL ABOUT?

Mary is true Mother of God (Theotokos) according to his humanity. Jesus Christ
was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and was born of the Virgin Mary. Mary is all-
holy and sinless (Immaculate Conception). She is the virginal mother (Ever-
Virgin).

The title “Mother of God” does not mean Mary somehow existed before God or
created God, but that Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is fully God and fully human.
The Catechism puts it like this, “In fact, the One whom she conceived as man by
the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the flesh, was none other
than the Father’s eternal Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Hence the
Church confesses that Mary is truly ‘Mother of God’ (Theotokos)”
 WHY IT BECAME DOGMA?

Within the Orthodox doctrinal teaching on the economy of salvation, Mary's identity, role,
and status as Theotokos is acknowledged as indispensable. For this reason, it is formally
defined as official dogma.

.The first and foremost revealed truth about our Blessed Mother from which all other dogmas,
titles and honors flow is the dogma "Mary, Mother of God." Emphasizing on the noble role of
the Blessed Virgin Mary's Divine Motherhood, Vatican II has used the following words: "She
is endowed with high office and dignity of the Mother of the Son of God, and therefore she is
also the beloved daughter of the Father and the temple of the Holy Spirit. Because of this gift
of sublime grace she far surpasses all creatures both in heaven and on earth." (1) The
Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431 defined the true personal unity of Christ and
consequently declared that the Blessed Virgin Mary is the "Mother of God" or Theotokos.
This Council approved the teaching of St. Cyril of Alexandria against the errors of Nestorius,
Bishop of Constantinople.
