Municipal

A solid decision

• On June 10, 1872, he was sent to Manila


to get qualified in college.
• But in unexpected circumstances Rizal
went to Ateneo Municipal instead.
• The change of his Last name from
Mercado to Rizal.

perseverance and resilience as Filipino.

A struggle of a regular student
• Rizal’s academic performance has not soared as he did in Ateneo Municipal.
- His grades were not as high compared to when he was at Ateneo. He got high and low grades among
his 21 subjects.

• The Racial discrimination and bigotry


- It was said that the reason for his low grades was the unfair treatment he received from his
professors and fellow students.
- The Dominican professors were hostile to him, and Filipinos were racially discriminated
against Spanish students.

Becoming a Legend
• Rizal won against Spaniard’s competition.
- He won the competition Liceo Artistico-Literario or Artistic-literary in 1879 at the age of 18. The title of
his piece is “A la Juventud Filipina” or To the Filipino Youth. He received a feather shaped silver pen with a gold
ribbon tied to it.
- A year after, another literary competition was hel d for the commemoration of the 4th centennial of the
death of Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote.
- Rizal won yet again with his piece entitled El Consejo De Los Dioses or Council of the Gods. He was
awarded with a gold ring embedded with bust of Cervantes.
Spanish brutality
• After the first school year ended in UST (1878) he
went home to Calamba, this was when experienced
firsthand how brutal the Spaniards can be.
• One day when it was nearing nightfall, he passed by a
Spanish official not knowing the customary of
bowing whenever you see a Spaniard. This Spaniard
was offended by his action thus he reacted by
slashing Rizal on his back with a sword.
• Rizal reported this incident to General Primo de
Rivera but failed to get his justice.
