“The Narendra Modi Government has announced a
budget allocation of Rs 1,40,367.13 cr for FY23
for the Indian Railways, which is up 27.5 per cent
over the outlay announced during the Budget 2021.

Introduction
o An intelligent transportation system (ITS) is an advanced
application which aims to provide innovative services relating
to different modes of transport and traffic management and
enable users to be better informed and make safer, more
coordinated, and 'smarter' use of transport networks.
 Indian railways (IR) are the third largest railway network in the world in terms of size and fourth largest rail
freight carrier.

 To achieve effective, efficient and safe transportation, railway industries have to move from old traditional
manual work, mechanization and electronic usage to intelligent transportation system (ITS).

 An efficient Railway Intelligent Transportation System (RITS) will enable railways to detect Naxalite or
terrorist attacks, notify appropriate authorities, and recover more rapidly from the incidents.

 Railways will have continuous, real-time information with which they can manage their operations.

 A wireless communication based RITS can bring together a number of technologies, for example, sensors,
communications, computing, intelligent control, management, interlocks, speed control, customer service,
planning and scheduling and many more.

ITS in High-
speed Trains
 High-speed trains operate significantly faster than traditional trains and the
major challenge is how to improve the safety and reliability when operating at
such high speeds.

 The goal is to build a high-speed RITS with real-time on-board condition

monitoring, data transmission and data analysis.

 The diagram demonstrates how the customer integrated several transportation-

certified solutions into a high-speed railway infrastructure, including networks
and devices such as on-board sensors, data transmission, intelligent railway
gateway devices and human machine interfaces (HMI) for complete
connectivity.
This system is comprised of three layers.

1. Sensor Layer: There are a multitude of sensor used for quantifying

environmental statuses such as temperature and humidity, which can be
combined with the measurements from other systems. The sensor layer can
obtain information for the following:

(A) General train information: Position, velocity, etc.

(B) Track information: Acceleration, temperature and stress information
(C) Power system: Voltage, transformer, inverter and brakes
(D) On-board equipment: Air conditioning, doors, temperature, humidity and
pressure
(E) Public security: Smoke detectors
2. Network Layer: The network layer is comprised of three sub-networks. They are
railway network, ground-railway communication layer and ground fiber layer. The
railway network consists of the Multifunction Vehicle Bus (MVB) inside each train cart
and the Wire Train Bus (WTB) to connect the MVB parts with the train control system.
The network layer has the following functions:

(A) General data acquisition and data storage

(B) Real-time data analysis and diagnosis
(C) Alert management
3. Data Analysis Layer: This layer features a railway intelligent gateway device, which
relays information by wirelessly connecting to a ground data center. The central
unit of the railway network is designed to analyze the data acquired from the sensor
layer. It can process the data, diagnose the operational status of multiple trains,
send alerts/warning messages to the conductor, and provide wireless
communication between the train control system and ground data centers. Ground
data centres manage important operational data and can be used to request
maintenance based on the prediction of system failure. The data analysis layer has
the following functions:

(A) Display operating information

(B) Show alert/warning messages
(C) Troubleshooting guide
(D) Troubleshooting derivation
(E) Knowledge base input and expansion

ITS Application
in Railways
Superfast maglev trains
• Maglev trains — which use magnets to
float carriages above the ground without
the need for wheels — are currently the
fastest form of rail travel in existence.
• The Shanghai maglev train, which connects
Pudong Airport to a major metro terminal
outside the city, is currently the fastest in
the world.
• The 19-mile journey takes approximately 7
minutes to complete at speeds of 268 MPH.
High-speed biometric and microchip ticketing
systems
 A company called Cubic Transportation Systems recently presented a gateless
entry system that uses a combination of Bluetooth and facial recognition
software to help passengers quickly pay for their trip and get onto their train.

 Swedish train operator SJ Railways, meanwhile, has already started using

microchips to quickly allow rail passengers to validate their tickets.
Cabin space optimization
The Priestman Goode company provided a concept for
optimized seating for crowded trains.
Smart sensors for automated track and train
inspection
 An important factor in automating railways is the sensing
and utilization of huge amounts of data that comes from
railways, trains, and passengers.
 Companies like Siemens and Thales develop sensors that
help to maintain trains and keep passengers safe.
 An example is Siemens' Broken Rail Detection (BRD).
 The system is so accurate that it can identify any break in a
rail track using GPS positioning that locates a breakage
within 100 mm.
Modular trains that don't need to stop to allow
passengers to get off

 PriestmanGoode recently developed a concept where metro cars would

travel on a loop from the city to a high-speed rail on the outskirts.
 The metro cars would link up to high-speed trains, allowing passengers to
board and exit the train without it having to slow down.
 While the concept does seem a little dangerous, it has the potential to
dramatically improve the accessibility of high-speed rail travel for large
populations.

Conclusion
 Intelligent transport systems improve transportation infrastructure. Their
implementation is very important, because of their positive effects on
traffic safety and efficiency, reducing costs.

 Road transport has more possibilities to use intelligent transport systems

than rail transport. And it is easier to use many technologies in road
transport.

 We have to find ways how to include more technologies into railways to

make them safer.
