Malaysia faces several issues regarding language. There is a tension between promoting the Malay language for nationalism and using English for internationalization in areas like science and technology. While the Malay language has status as the sole official language, English is seen as necessary to keep up with advancing knowledge. However, many Malaysians have low reading habits and proficiency in English is uneven. A study found that a third of English teachers were incapable of teaching the subject properly. Changing language policies have also been difficult to implement due to lack of preparation.
