This document discusses how GRAPHALLOY, a graphite/metal alloy, can be used for pump bushings, wear rings, and other components to improve pump efficiency and reliability. GRAPHALLOY allows for tighter clearances that reduce vibration and leakage while preventing metal-on-metal contact that could cause seizing. Its stable and tough properties make it suitable for operating pumps at tighter tolerances.

GRAPHALLOY is a graphite/metal alloy used extensively for pump bushings and
wear rings. GRAPHALLOY enables rings and bushings to be designed with tighter clearances which can improve efficiency, increase output, reduce vibration. In addition the stuffing box bushing will also reduce leakage of external seal flush into the process fluid. GRAPHALLOY can also be used in the gland as a backup or disaster bushing reducing process fluid leakage in the event of a seal failure. GRAPHALLOY’s non-galling, dimensionally stable, toughness enables the pump to operate at these tight fits without the risk of metal-on-metal rubs or seizure. GRAPHALLOY Case Wear Rings for Impoved Pump Reliability Graphalloy can be designed to run at 50% of API’s recommended clearances for metallic wear part materials. Tighter clearances decrease vibration, shaft deflection, and leakage across wear rings and this can result in several percentage point increases in efficiency. The reduction in vibration levels also result in fewer seal and bearing failures.
