THE PSYCHOLOGY EXPERIMENT

1.
BETWEEN SUBJECTS DESIGN
1. Investigating the efficacy of three different drugs for
treating depression, one group of depressed individuals
would receive one of the drugs, a different group would
receive another one of the drugs, and yet another group
would receive the remaining drug.
2. 2. You’re interested in studying whether age influences
reaction times in a new cognitive task. You gather a sample
and assign participants to groups based on their age:
the first group is aged between 21–30,
the second group is aged between 31–40,
the third group is aged between 41–50.
The procedure for all participants is the same: they arrive at the
lab individually and perform the reaction time task. Then, you
assess age group differences in reaction times.
WITHIN SUBJECTS DESIGN

1. For example, in a candy taste test, the researcher

would want every participant to taste and rate each
type of candy.
Emily is a psychologist who is interested in the effects
of noise level on concentration. She believes that the
noisier a room is, the less people will be able to
concentrate.
To test her hypothesis, Emily gathers a bunch of
volunteers and gives them a passage to read in a noisy
room. Afterward, she tests their memory of the reading
passage. Then, she puts all of the volunteers into a room
that's quiet and has them read another passage. Finally,
she tests them on the passage they read in the quiet
room.
ACTIVITY:
1. You’re planning to study whether taking a nap after a learning
session can improve test scores.

2. Let's imagine that you are doing an experiment on exercise

and memory. For your independent variable, you decide to
try two different types of exercise: yoga and jogging.

How will you conduct the experiment using:

a. BETWEEN SUBJECTS DESIGN
b. WITHIN SUBJECTS DESIGN
