THE NECKLACE

Group 4
• Introduction

1. “The Necklace” (“La Parure”) is one of the most famous short stories by Guy De
Maupassant. It tells a story about a French middle-class couple in the 19th
century. The wife is longing for a luxurious life, unappreciative of her
husband, and relatively happy life the couple is leading. Madame Loisel
spends her time dreaming about all the luxuries they cannot afford to
purchase while experiencing a feeling of shame for their actual life. The events
described in the story reveal the features of the character of the heroine, which
eventually leads her to live a life far poorer than she used to lead. An
unexpected and ironic outcome provides a complex moral lesson that the
readers are supposed to learn along with Madame Loisel.
• Body
• FIRST BODY PARAGRAPH i'n the story "the necklace" the author
shows the theme through the characterization of Madame Loisel when
she always kept thinking that she is way more important and richer than
her current life "She suffered intensely, feeling herself born for every
delicacy and every luxury" so basically she is selfish for not appreciating
her position in life. Also you can tell that Madame Loisel is selfish for
asking Mister Loisel for a new dress and not wearing her regular dress
because she thinks it is not good enough and she doesn't want to look any
less than the woman. She the starts to complain about not having nice
jewels to wear and make the whole situation plight, But it’s not necessary
at all. Mathilde tries to quit trip Mr. Loisel by using her selfish behavior.
Conclusion
In the end, she learns that her image of high society was
snot real: the lack of appreciation of her moderate but
sufficient fortune led to disastrous outcomes, and her
husband’s efforts to provide for her went undeservingly
unnoticed. (The deceptiveness of appearances is the major
theme of the story).
Theme
Appearances’ Deceptiveness
The deceptiveness in the appearance of the character can be
observed by her efforts to look rich and beautiful and to represent
a social class for which she desires to become a part. But in reality,
she is not wealthy, and she belongs to a family with a middle-class
lifestyle. She tries her best to look different from the way she is.
She has an ideal life of illusion in her head, and she lives in that
illusion rather than living happily in real life she has. She believes
that she is beautiful and she is worthy of living in a better place
than the place she is living in with her husband.
Moral
The Moral of the story “The Necklace” is to be satisfied with
what one has. In the story, Mathilde is not happy with
anything. Her apartment is not grand enough. Her single
servant is not enough.
“all that glitters is not gold.” Mathilde’s values are superficial,
and she only attaches importance to external appearances.
She fails to recognize that everything that looks attractive is
not valuable, and she pays the price for her mistake.
