A Brief Introduction

to
Hindu Astrology

By
Mrs. Abha Sharma,
MBA, Jyotishacharya
1
What is Astrology?
• The science of predicting the
timing of probable events
based on the planetary
influences on human beings

2
Classification of Astrology
• Ancient Scientists or “Maharishies” have
written many literary mile stones for this
pious science & they broadly divided it into
3 major categories:
– Ganita (Sidhanta / Mathematical
Astrology)
– Hora (Jataka / Natal / Individual
Astrology)
– Sanhita ( Mundane / Medini Jyotish)
3
Astrology and Science
• Science is the knowledge ascertained by
experiments, critically tested, systematized
and brought under general principles with
cause and effect and replication principals.
• Similarly, Astrology principles are also
replicated and applied on different horoscopes
– i.e. Basic principles of Astrology can be used on
charts of different people.
– The Astrology principles can be validated on all of
them
4
Our Ignorance
• It’s our ignorance due to the centuries of
slavery of our country which resulted in the
destruction of our cultural and ethnic roots
and our sacred literature and many occult
“Vidyas”.
• For example:
– One Astrology rule says that a native becomes
a parent when Transiting Saturn and Jupiter
touches the Child house and / or its lord by
position, aspect and conjunction
– This principle has been validated multiple times
by our Guruji Shri K. N. Rao in his book
“Planets and children”.
5
What is Karma Theory
• The Karma Theory has three
parts—Reincarnation
– Our propensity of doing
Karmas.
•An action - less existence is not
possible.
– Fruits of all actions (“ mansic,
vachic, kayeek”)
•To be enjoyed or suffered. 6
Astrology and Karma Theory
• These three pillars (Reincarnation,
Propensity & Fruits) help us to live life and
fight up the fears and achieve our life’s
ultimate goal i.e.Salvation or “Moksha”.
• Astrology is merely the medium of
indicating karmic pattern which has a link
with the past life and also with the future.
– The karmic pattern is woven in the horoscope
so as to indicate the balance of karmas that the
native is carrying as well as his task in this life.
7
What is a horoscope?
• A horoscope is a road map for one’s destiny.
• Horoscope has 12 houses where 12 rashies /
signs are placed along with 9 planets.
• The mutual combinations of these 12 house,
12 rashies and 9 planets make 12*12*9 =
1296 combinations
• If we add 27 Nakshatra ( Constellations)
also, then they make 34992 combinations in
a horoscope
8
Checking our Life’s Inclination
• Each one of us is motivated differently and
reacts in a different manner to a given
situation.
• It is outer manifestation of the karmic
pattern and the inner motivations to
exhaust the fruits of past karmas and to do
karmas that lead to emancipation is seen in
a horoscope.

9
12 Houses of a horoscope

• When we divide it into four parts

based on tatvas:
– Dharma --- Houses 1,5,9
– Artha ---- Houses 2,6,10
– Kama --- Houses 3,7,11
– Moksha ---Houses 4,8,12

10
Karmic Pattern
• The signs and Planets occupying and
influencing these houses indicate the
Karmic Pattern.
• If Majority of the Planets are in artha and
Kama houses, the native’s inclinations and
motivations are oriented in that direction.
• If conducive dashas are there in right
chronological growth, he can enjoy them
to the fullest.
11
Different Tatvas make different
people
• A spiritually inclined person will have
grouping of planets in the dharma and
moksha segments.
• Different combinations of all these four make
different types of people having different
outlooks and motivations.
• Here 5th and 9th houses play a noteworthy
role

12
Why we have different fates…
• Astrology tells us that our Karmas chase
us through various reincarnations
in the same manner as a newborn baby searches
her mother in the group of people around her
and locate her with precision.
• Past life Karmas result in the dashas
sequence we get at the time of birth and
then, the promise gets fructified in the dashas as
the transit comes.

13
Astrology as the best Therapy
• e.g. ---A lady was told about her divorce
problem in a few minutes without her
telling her problem to our guruji Sh.
K.N.Rao Sir, but on showing her
horoscope. That was quite clearly seen in
her chart as well as running dasha. She
acknowledged that her being a
Psychologist, it takes her more than two
hours of questioning to understand the
person and then offer him / her with the
solutions. 14
Astrology & Psychology
• An Astrologer is not only a guide but an able
psyche-analyzer also. He is approached by
persons who want answers for the fulfillment of their
materialistic or any other desires.
• Psychology is considered by people as the tool to
understand the mental problems.
• An astrologer can understand
these with more ease and
certainty
15
Understanding Astrology step by
step… with Incarnations
• The incarnations of Vishnu, viz. Śrī Ram, Śrī Krishn
Narasimha, Vaman , etc. are endowed with full
Parmatmansha and very little Jivansha.
• The four incarnations, viz. Ram, Krishna, Narasimh
and Varaha are wholly with Paramatmāńś. The other
incarnations (than these, out of the ten) have in
them Jivansha too.
• GOD has been incarnated, as the 9 (Nava) Grahas
(planets) to bestow on the living beings the results
due to their Karmas. He assumed the auspicious
form of Grahas to destroy the demons (evil forces)
and sustain the divine beings

16
Nine Planet Incarnations
• From Sūrya the incarnation of Ram, From Candr that of
Krishn ,From Mangal that of Narasimh ( God with face of
a lion), From Budh that of Buddha
• From Guru that of Vaman ( the tiny Brahman who asked
3 feet land as donation from Demon’s King Bali and
covered earth in one and heavon in second feet and for
third, king Bali had to offer his head)
• From Śukr that of Parashuram ( Brahmin who turned a
soldier to finish the the exploitation of poor people by
cruel Shatriya ( Warrior) Kings)
• From Śani that of Kurma (Tortoise), From Rahu that of
Varah (Pig) and
• From Ketu that of Meen Avtaar (Fish) who could take
the biggest Life boat having a pair of all species to a
safe place at the time of “Pralaya” (end of earth)
17
Living beings Incarnations
• All incarnations other than GOD, are through
Grahas which are in and so have roots with the
GOD. The beings with more Paramatmāńś are
called divine beings.
• The beings with more Jivatmāńś are (mortal)
beings.
• As soon as a living being improves his Karmas
• The Jivatma portions from the Grahas take
births, as human beings and live their lives
according to their Karmas and again merge in
the Grahas. And at the time of Great Destruction
( Pralaya) the Grahas as well merge with GOD.
18
Knowing Astrology…
• The one, who knows of all these, will become versed
in the knowledge of the past, present and future.
• Without a knowledge of Jyotish, these cannot be
known. Hence, everyone should have a knowledge
of Jyotish, particularly the Brahmins ( teaching /
preaching community)
• As per Hindu Scriptures, the one, who is devoid of
knowledge of Jyotish & blames this Vedic Science
will go to the hell called ‘Raurava’ and will be reborn
blind in next birth.

19
Who can be taught Astrology
• The creator “Brahmaji” told this pious science
to Maharishi Parashar who said that this
science should be taught to a person who has
following qualities:
• ---- Who doesn’t speak lies
• ---- Guru Bhakt
• ---- God Fearing
• ---- Cool minded
• ---- Good Person
20
Who can be called an Astrologer

• Ganteshu Pravino yaha shabdshastre kritshramah,

Nyayavid Buddhiman deshdikkaalagyo Jitendriyah.
Uhapoh patu, Horaskandha shrawan samastaha.
Maitreya, styam yaati tasya vaakyam na sanshaya.
Meaning : One who is well versed in mathematics,
grammer,good in justice,intelligence, geography, time
, logical reasoning, who has conquered his senses,
and has understood the Hora Shastra, can be called
an astrologer whose each prediction will be true.

21
Important Terms / Topology

• Planets
• Signs
• Nakshatras
• Kundali
• Houses
• Lagna
22
Planets
• Seven planets based on the days of the week,
namely
1. Sun or Surya from Ravivaar or Sunday

• Apart from these seven, there are two “Chayaa
Grihas or Shadow planets” called Rahu and Ketu.
Thus making a total of nine
23
Signs or Rashis

The SKY / Zodiac area is divided in 12 parts

equal to 12 ‘Rāśis’ in Hindu Astrology.
• As such the whole zodiac ( an ecliptic belt
of stars, called “Bhachakra” in sanskrit )
( 360 degrees ) can be classified into 12
divisions called signs of 30 degrees each.
• These commence from Aries/ Mesha

24
Which are the 12 Signs…
• Aries or Mesha from 0 to 30 degrees
• Taurus or Vrishabh from 30 to 60 degrees
• Gemini or Mithun from 60 to 90 degrees
• Cancer or Kark from 90 to 120 degrees
• Leo or Simha from 120 to 150 degrees
• Virgo or Kanya from 150 to 180 degrees

25
Nakshatras

• Those with many luminious bodies that have no

movements, are the Nakshatras (asterisms).
• Grahas move through the Nakshatras (or stellar
mansions) in the zodiac.
• The said zodiac comprises of 27 Nakshatras
commencing from Ashvini.
• Each Nakshatra is again sub- divided in four parts
or Charans of a Nakshatra. Hence, if we multiply
27 by 4 then, in all we have 108 subparts or the
lowest division of Zodiac.

26
Names of 27 Nakshatras
• The names of the 27 Nakshatras ( with their planetary
lords) are as follows:
• Ashvini(Ketu), Bharani(Venus), Krittika(Sun),
• Rohini(Moon), Mrigashira(Mars), Ardra(Rahu),
• Punarvasu(Jupiter), Pushya(Saturn), Ashlesha( Mercury),
• Magha(Ketu), Purvaphalguni(Sun), Uttaraphalguni(Venus),
• Hasta(Moon), Chitra(Mars), Swati(Rahu),

• Shravana(Moon), Dhanishtha(Mars), Satabhisha(Rahu),
• Purvabhadrapad(Jup.), Uttarabhadrapad(Sat.), Revati(Mer.)

27
What is a Kundali?

• It is the chart of 12 houses indicating the

placement of nine planets in the Zodiac at
the time of birth of an individual or an
event on earth.
• The 12 houses can have either of the 12
signs, 27 Nakshatras and/or the 9 planets.
The first house is called the Lagna or
Ascendent.
28
Authenticity of a Horoscope….
• Any good Astrology Software can help you in making a horoscope in a few seconds
but you need to check the authenticity of that chart by taking some check points:
• 1. Sun’s position in house( Sun is in the Lagna in the
morning, in 10th house at noon, in 7th house at evening, in
4th house at mid night)
• 2. Sun’s position in Sign ( as Sun travels in 12 signs in 12
months of a year)
• 3. Moon’s position in Sign (Sun & Moon conjoins in a sign
on “No Moon Day” and they are opposite houses/ 7 houses
apart on a “full Moon day”
• 4. Lagna / Ascendent ( Sign in Lagna has direct relation
with the personality of the person)_

29
The 12 Houses…

• The 12 houses indicate different aspects of life of

the native or event.
• The results almost 35000/- combinationms depend
on the combinations and permutations made by the
12 signs, 12 houses, 27 nakshatras and 9 planets.
• 12 * 12= 144
• 144 * 9 = 1296
• 1296 * 27 = 34,992

34
Ascendant or Lagna…
• The Rāśi rising at the eastern horizon on
the altitude of birth of a native or an event is
called as ‘Lagn’, which is due to the rotation of the earth
on its own axis at a rate of motion, causing every degree
of the zodiac seemingly ascend on the eastern horizon.
• Lagn is a very important point in the
horoscope as based on Lagn sign and the Grahas,
joining and departing from each other in different signs,
the native’s good and bad effects are deducted.
• Approximately, two hours are required for a Rāśi to
pass via the horizon, thereby every degree taking four
minutes to ascend. This duration, however, is actually
dependent on the concerned latitude.
