UNDERSTANDING
PATTERNS AND
SEQUENCES
WHAT IS A PATTERN?
Patterns may be shown in many ways. Repeating shapes, numbers or colors make patterns.
Even simple shapes when repeated can make beautiful patterns.
FINITE AND INFINITE PATTERN OF
NUMBERS
 Finite Patterns – patterns that stops.
example: 3, 6 , 9, 12

 Infinite Patterns – patterns without end or are continuous. Three dots

(…) are written at the end of an infinite pattern to show that there are
more numbers not shown in the list.
example: 3, 6, 9, 12, …
SEQUENCE
 A sequence is a set of numbers written in special order by the application of a definite
rule.
 Each number in the sequence is called a term.
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, …

 The four basic operations (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division) are
commonly used in a sequence of numbers.

GROUP ACTIVITY:
Direction: Read and solve the problem on a sheet of paper.
1. A pile of blocks has 40 blocks in the bottom row, 36 blocks in the
second row, 32 blocks on the third row and so on until there are
only 4 blocks on the top row. How many blocks are there in the 7th
row? How many blocks are there in all?

2. Carol has a list of numbers: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15. If she continues this

list, what will be the next four numbers in her list?
