surfers (8 marks) in a sentence first
One difference in the surfboards is in how valued and respected they are. In
Hawaii, in Source B, the surfboards appear to be appreciated more because it
says that they are made from “the native breadfruit tree and then blessed in a
simple ritual.” The fact that they are blessed suggests that surfboards are
treasured in almost a religious way possibly because they connect surfers with
nature. Moreover perhaps it reveals that they want the surfboards to not be
made artificially as it could ruin the relationship between man and the sport and
so they are made with a “native” wood which connects man more with nature.
Whereas in Source A, in California, the boards don’t seem as cherished because
it says that they are “made of mahogany” and even “paddle-board lifeguards
used for rescues”. This demonstrates how the boards are used by anyone and
are made more artificially which stresses that they aren’t solely for a surfer and
aren’t made with as much as care because it is made with artificial materials and
made versatile rather than for just a surfer.

The writer uses the adverb ‘majestically’ to describe how the

surfers ride on the waves. This perhaps suggests how dominant
the surfers appear because they are easily able to control the
waves like it is their own. Moreover this associates the surfers
with royalty and some form of regular figure riding high above this
waves. This could link the surfers to an image of Neptune: the
mythical god of the sea, because of the adverbs associations with
royalty and dominance. The writer here has created a royal image
to emphasise to encourage the reader to think that the surfers are
in control because of how confident and assured they seem.

In Source A, the writer feels so inspired by surfing that they hold a more
physical connection with it than the writer in Source B. This is clear through
Doyle’s repetition of first person phrases like “it was almost as if I were on the
board myself” and “it was almost as if I could feel it in my bones.” This
repetition demonstrates how Doyle has a more passionate attitude towards
surfing and doesn’t want to just spectate. Moreover, the first person pronouns
highlight how he feels that the surfers has influenced him to attempt it himself
so that he too can feel like the “gods” that he describes. Whereas, in Source B,
Bird doesn’t feel the same physical connection and enjoys being outside of the
experience through the asyndetic list “The sea was so blue, the sunlight so
soft, the air so sweet.” Bird’s sibilance highlights how serene she feels as a
spectator to surfing because it is a slowing sound which is a calmer perspective
than Source B. Moreover Bird’s focus on nature rather than the surfers
themselves who are “bronzed Gods” in Source A, shows that Bird doesn’t feel
as inspired as Doyle because they don’t focus their full attention on the surfers
and are distracted enough to be in awe of the surroundings instead.

Heading: Dust off passports; it’s time you stopped letting technology travel for you.
P1 = Intro: start with list of beautiful places and contrast with a bleak room in Britain to show how they haven’t moved. End with a
rhetorical question about opening a cage and taking my hand.

P2: Travelling pushes us out of comfort zones. Compare with Attenborough who is 93 and still pushes comfort zones. Don’t have to jump
into a cage near sharks to develop courage and understanding of the world: climbing a mountain, feeling lost in streets of Venice with no
wifi, letting salty feathery prawns from the Spanish coast fill bloated bellies.

P3: The internet doesn’t let you experience the same emotions than when you actually travel there.
Give examples of happy, frustrating and hilarious moments when in other cultures
The feeling of being so inadequate when stood inside a church that has outlived you, your grandparents, great grandparents and great,
great grandparents and that it will continue to be here after you.
Triumph when you communicate with locals.
Seeing how British people cannot cope in the heat; Greek people in jeans.

P4: travelling is an ‘unedited’ experience

Television and social media and pictures edit it to make it look better. There is no way to cut out the foreboding tension at Auschwitz. No
way to brighten the luminous lights in Iceland. No way to tweak the feeling of the grumble from the dormant monster of Mt Vesuvius. In
fact you become the master of brightening, amplifying and intensifying how it looks and feels. You are a better editor than Instagram or
snapchat could ever be.

Conclusion: go back to the first lines. Now really dip those toes into the water and let its warm grip snake up your ankles and thighs. Now
really let the sun’s embrace prickle and tingle your nose. Now really take that deep breath of relief that you’ve, yes you, made it to the top
of the mountain.
‘These days, there is no point travelling to see the world: we can
see it all on TV or on the internet.’
Write an article for a teenage magazine in which you explain your
point of view on this statement.
You climbed the honey streaked mountains. You dipped your toes into diaphanous
velvet seas. You ambled with your rucksack down cobbled alleyways of history. You did
this as the merciless British wind battered your window and you sat enclosed in your
thick bed quilt with your toes snugly wrapped in parcels of bed socks. I’ve done it too.
I’ve travelled 12 hours on a plane to exotic lands without taking a step out of my
bedroom and without suffocating the lungs of my bank account. But did you really
experience it? Did the smells linger on your clothes and the smiles of locals were etched
into your memory? No. I thought not. This is simply it: travelling to a new world can’t be
done inside a dormant cage of phones and television. Open the door and take my hand;
you cannot have travel imprint its beautiful mark on you if you let technology try to do it
for you.
Plan an answer to either of these Q5s
