 The term multimedia was coined by singer and artist
Bobb Golstein in 1966. This describes the nature of
his entertainment.
 It has taken almost 40 years to have coherent
meaning of use.
 In 1993, Tay Vaughan declared its definition in his
book entitled, “Multimedia: Making it Work” .

 Multimedia is a combination of multiple forms of


media useful to communicate.
Multimedia

 Is a presentation of material that uses both words


and pictures in a combination of text, voice, picture,
or video.
 Audiobooks are ideal for second-language learners.
 Song files and music videos can be used to compare
social norms in different eras.
The multimedia formats for various media
includes:
 texts and graphics for slideshows, presentations,
diagrams, and infographics
 audio has podcasts and recordings
 screen captures, lecture captures, and animation are
examples of video animation components of
multimedia
 Other multimedia components include blog, vlogs,
webinar, and other interactive contents.
 Multimedia applications include the interaction of
different multimedia types like animation, video,
text, and sound.
 It has become a part of our lives as soon as we
entered the digital age.
Components of
Multimedia
1. Text

 Before, in literary theory, a text is any object that can


be read.
 Now, text messaging or texting, is the act of
composing and sending electronic messages.
2. Audio

 It is sound, especially when recorded, transmitted,


and reproduced.
 common types:
voiceover, music, and special effects
3. Videos

 electronic medium for the recording, copying,


playback, broadcasting, and display of moving visual
media.
 example formats:
wmv, avi, mpeg, flash, mp3, and mp4
Digital Video Formats
 MPEG (.MPG/.MPEG)

- Developed by Moving Pictures Expert Group. The


first popular video format on the web. Not supported
anymore in HTML.
 AVI (.AVI)

- AVI (Audio Visual Interleave) Developed by


Microsoft. Commonly used in video cameras and TV
hardware. Plays well on Windows computers, but not
in web browsers.
 WMA (.WMA)

- WMA (Windows Media Audio) Developed by


Microsoft. Plays well on Windows computers, but not
in web browsers.
 FLASH (SWF/SMALL WEB FILE)

- Flash video is a container file format used to


deliver digital video content over the Internet using
Adobe Flash Player version 6 and newer.
 MP3 (.MP3)

- MP3 files are actually the sound part of MPEG


files. MP3 is the most popular format for music
platers. Combines good compression (small files) with
high quality. Supported by all browsers.
 MP4 (.MP4)
- MP4 is a video format, but can also be used for
audio. Supported by all browsers.
4. Images/Graphics

 A visual representation of something and are needed


to create videos and animations.

5. Animation

 a method in which figures are manipulated to appear


as moving images.
 common format/platform:
flash (commonly used in animated movies)
 Tay Vaughan also added that multimedia can be
called interactive when it allows people to generate
computer commands.

 Multimedia can be used in presentations, making them
more fun and interesting.
 It also has various viewing options such as projector or a
media player and the like.
 You can also download the multimedia presentation or play
it live.
 The technology of multimedia can also be used to make the
information be conveyed more easily to the user.
 Multimedia has improved the learning experience by
combining various forms of media together.
Benefits
of Multimedia
1. Digital Storytelling allows students to improve their
knowledge about a specific subject and increases skills
such as writing, researching, and reading.
2. Using multimedia improves a learner’s overall
performance.
- In particular, multimedia in the classroom is used in self-directed
learning or SDL.
3. Students manage their time and assess what needs to
be included in their learning activities.
- This style of learning is used mostly with older students who
already know how to manipulate many of the multimedia venues
available to them.
