Series Circuit Definition
Series Circuit: A Series Circuit is where all the electrical components are connected
one after another. (end to end)

There is one path for the electrons to take.

● Electrons flow from negative to positive.

● Each electrical component will have a resistance, and will resist the flow of
electrons when voltage is applied.
Schematic Diagrams
When electricians are analyzing circuits they use schematic diagrams to help them
determine current, resistance, and voltage throughout the circuit.
Resistance
Total Resistance: The total resistance of a series circuit is equal to the sum of
individual resistances.
Current
Current: Is the flow of the electrons in the circuit.

Key Ideas

● When resistance is applied to the circuit, it reduces the current,

and we do less work.

● Resisters protect the electrical components in a circuit.

● In a series circuit, the current is the same throughout.

Voltage

Voltage Drop: the amount of voltage loss that occurs through all or part of a circuit
due to resistance.

Examples
Key Ideas

● Resistors drop the voltage (done by heat)

● Resisters divide the voltage across the circuit.

● The total voltage drop is equal to the sum of each individual

resistor’s voltage drop.
Power Consumption
Examples
Examples
Key Ideas

● When there is less resistance there is more power consumption,

because when there is less resistance there is more current,
therefore more heat loss.
