Understanding the business environment
• The business environment (climate) is constantly changing, and it is becoming more
and more complex.
• Organizations, private and public, are under pressures that force them to respond
quickly to changing conditions and to be innovative in the way they operate.
• Such activities require organizations to be agile and to make frequent and quick
strategic, tactical, and operational decisions, some of which are very complex.
• Making such decisions may require considerable amounts of relevant data,
information, and knowledge. Processing these, in the framework of the needed
decisions, must be done quickly, frequently in real time, and usually requires some
computerized support.

The Business Pressures-Responses-Support
Model
The Business Pressures-Responses-Support Model, as its name indicates, has three
com- ponents:
• business pressures that result from today's business climate,
• responses (actions taken) by companies to counter the pressures (or to take
advantage of the opportunities available in the environment),
• and computerized support that facilitates the monitoring of the environment and
enhances the response actions taken by organizations.

Business Intelligence (BI)
Business intelligence (BI) is an umbrella term that combines architectures, tools, data- bases,
analytical tools, applications, and methodologies. It is, like DSS, a content-free expression, so it
means different things to different people. Part of the confusion about BI lies in the flurry of
acronyms and buzzwords that are associated with it (e.g., business performance management
[BPM]). Bi's major objective is to enable interactive access (sometimes in real time) to data, to
enable manipulation of data, and to give business managers and analysts the ability to conduct
appropriate analyses. By analyzing historical and current data, situations, and performances,
decision makers get valuable insights that enable them to make more informed and better
decisions. The process of BI is based on the transformation of data to information, then to
decisions, and finally to actions.

Why Business Intelligence Matters
Business Intelligence helps business leaders use data in ways that are meaningful and
powerful. Utilizing the tools derived from BI components, organizations can better
leverage data for competitive advantages. Used properly, the data can drive business
decisions that can proactively respond to market trends and other external factors. While
businesses today collect and store copious amounts of raw data, few are actually
harnessing the power of that data to drive business insights and transformations. The only
true constant in business is that it’s always changing. Business Intelligence provides
methodologies and tools for today’s business leaders to change effectively and lead their
organizations with fact-based decisions and a more holistic view of growth potential.

Information vs Intelligence
Difference between information and intelligence is distinct in their definitions and meanings,
but it is an interesting topic to discuss as they are two interrelated subjects. Both terms,
information and intelligence, function as nouns in English language. Information is data or
knowledge of something learned or gained from somewhere. Intelligence, on the other hand,
can be defined as the ability to comprehend, understand, logic, memory planning, etc.
Information is available everywhere to anybody, but intelligence could be different from one
person to another. However, both terms have an interrelationship with each other. Information
may help to increase the level of intelligence in a person.

What is the difference between
Information and Intelligence?
When we consider about both terms, we see an interrelationship between them.
• Information is available to any person, anywhere in the world equally.
• In contrast, intelligence is something innate to humans and the level of intelligence
varies from one person to another.
• Information collection of a person depends on the level of that person’s
intelligence. In that sense, there is an interrelationship between the two terms.
