Plan
• Elementary and secondary education
• Higher education
• About 85% of American school students
attend public schools
• 15% attend private schools
• 6-3-3 plan,includes elementary school in
grades 1 through 6,junior high school in
grades 7 through 9 and senior high school in
grades 10 through 12
• In 1983, the Commission made several
recommendations:
• lengthen the school day and year;
• establish a new core curriculum for all
students
• raise the standards of performance
Higher education
• 1 -the university
• 2- the four-year undergraduate institution- the
college
• 3-the technical training institution
• 4- the two-year ,or community college
• SAT- the Scholastic Aptitude Test in Maths and
Verbal Ability
• 1600 scores –a good result; 400 scores –poor
• The SAT is taken in the 11 th grade of high
school
• Harvard university was founded in 1636
• William and Mary College in 1693
• Yale (Connecticut) in 1701
• In 1783 six more colleges had been added:
Princeton(New Jersey) Columbia (New
York)Brown (Rhode Island), Rutgers University
and Dartmouth
• In 1862 the Land Grant Colleges were founded
• In the 19th century the Johns Hopkins
University opened in Maryland , the University
of Chicago in Illinois and Stanford University in
California
