Self Determination Theory

 Contemporary Theory of Motivation

“  Developed by Psychologists Edward
and Richard Ryan
Deci

 This theory states that human have innate

tendency to move towards growth and that
innate tendency of growth is facilitated by
three needs i.e. Competence, Autonomy and
Relatedness.

3
What is Motivation
- Driving force that compels an individual to initiate
and sustain a behavior or an action
It has two types:
1. Intrinsic Motivation
This type of motivation originates from within an individual
and involves rewards in form of personal gratifications
2. Extrinsic Motivation:
This type of Motivation originates outside of an individual
and usually involves some tangible reward.

4
Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are highly
influential determinants of our behavior, and both
drive us to meet the three basic needs identified by the
SDT model:

5
Self Determination Theory and Personality
○ According to theorist  Edward Deci
and Richard Ryan, personality difference
is influenced by the extent to which these
needs are met in an individual.
○ They identified two main aspects on
which individuals differ from each other
○ 1. Causality Orientation
○ 2. Aspiration /Life Goals.

6
Causality Orientation
- It tells us how a person adapts according
to his/her environment and extent of self
determination in general
- Theorist identified three causality
orientation based on the amount of needs
that are fulfilled.
- 1. Autonomous – All three needs are
fulfilled
- 2.Controlled - Competence and
.
Relatedness
- 3. Impersonal – None of three needs are
satisfied

Life goals/Aspiration

- This is what people use to guide

their behaviors.
