THE ANGLO SAXON HAD DIFFERENT CRIMES
LIKE:

 Folk-leasing - telling untruths about a person that

could spoil their reputation.

 Stealing a nun and running off with her.

 Stealing things from other people.

 Plotting against the king.

 Harbouring an exiled person (a person who had

committed a crime and had been banished from
England).

 Failing to try and apprehend a thief.

THE NORMAN HAD DIFFERENT CRIME LIKE:

•Murdrum – if a Norman was killed, the hundred that the Norman was found in
would be charged a large communal fine.

•Forest Laws – much of the common woodland in England was taken by the king to

NORMAN
be his personal hunting grounds. Any person found taking wood or animals from that
land would commit a crime.

•Poaching – hunting or taking animals from land that was not yours.

CRIME •It became illegal for a serf, often referred to as peasants, to leave their Norman lord’s
village or to marry without his permission.

•Plotting against the king.

•Harbouring an exile or outlaw, a person that was hiding from the authorities after
having committed a crime.
THE LATE MEDIEVAL POPLE HAD CRIMES LIKE:

•The Statute of Labours – a law that made it illegal for workers to

ask for higher wages.

LATE •Heresy – this period saw a growth in different views of the

Christian religion. People who spoke out against the established

MEDIEVAL
status quo were charged with heresy, the crime of going against the
Church.
•Crimes of theft, kidnap, plotting against the king, telling lies and
murder were all still present.

Edward III also repealed the murdrum law. By this period the
Forest Laws, although still laws, were not enforced as heavily as
they were in the time of the Normans.
