Practical Renal Pathology

Acute Diffuse Glomerulonephritis

Enlarged kidney, congested with pinpoint hemorrhage in cortex and medulla.

Cortex is well differentiated from the medulla. The capsule strips easily.
Acute diffuse glomerulonephritis

Hypercellularity with presence of PNLs in the glomeruli, obliteration

of Bowman’s space and compressed and obliterated capillaries
Chronic GN

Contracted kidney showing granular outer surface with adherent renal

capsule. The cut section showed loss of differentiation between cortex and
medulla.
Chronic glomerulonephritis

Hyalinization of the glomerulus. Dilated tubules with hyaline casts

inside. Lymphocytic infiltration.

Renal cell carcinoma

A circumscribed yellowish mass with false capsule invading The

renal pelvis with areas of hemorrhage and necrosis in cut section.
Renal cell carcinoma(clear cell type)

Groups of malignant cells with large pale vacuolated cytoplasm. The

groups are separated by delicate vascular connective tissue stroma.

Wilm’s tumor

A circumscribed irregular tan white non-encapsulated tumor mass destroying the

renal tissue and infiltrating the renal capsule with areas of haemorrhage and necrosis.
Wilm’s Tumor in kidney

The tumor consists of epithelial elements (abortive tubules and

abortive glomeruli), sheets of dark blue blastima cells as well as
malignant spindle cell stroma.

lobulated kidney. The renal pelvicalyces contains cavities filled with clear
urine and separated by fibrous septa. The renal parenchyma is compressed & fibrosed.
Papillary transitional cell carcinoma, Urinary Bladder

This tumor arises from the bladder wall and shows groups of malignant
transitional epithelial cells forming papillae with inner fibrovascular core.
