Directions: Classify each of the following substances as elements or
compounds. Write (E) if it is classified as an element and (C) if it
is classified as a compound. Write your answer on the space provided.

1. Diamond (C) 6. Bismuth (Bi)

2. Glucose (C6H12O6) 7. Uranium (U)

3. Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4) 8. Water (H2O)

4. Iron (Fe) 9. Alcohol (CH3OH)

5. Krypton (K) 10. Ammonia (NH3)

Directions: Read each statement carefully. Encircle the
letter of the correct answer.
1. All the following are characteristics of an atom EXCEPT:
a. Smallest unit of every substance
b. Cannot be broken down into simpler forms.
c. Can be broken down into simpler forms
d. Contains protons, electrons, and neutrons.
2. Which of the following statements best describes molecule?
a. Particle consisting of two or more atoms combined in a specific
arrangement
b. The largest particle of an element or compound that can exist
independently.
c. It is too small to be observed and cannot be seen by the naked
eye.
d. It is an electrically positive particle.

• We will now be going to
discuss atoms and
molecules.
• I know that you already
have an idea of what an
atom and molecules are
• Take look at the picture
• In a very simple representation that
is how atoms and molecules look
like. That is your elementary
representation of atom and
molecules.
• Atom is the fundamental building
block for chemistry. If there is no
atom wala tayong pagaaralan.
there will not be chemistry, no
chemical reaction and probably
walang matter.
• Atom, the smallest unit that
matter can be broken down into
without releasing any electrically
charged particles. – kahit hatiin
mo pa ng pinong pino ang isang
bagay sa pinakamaliit na
component niya there will always
be an atom in it.
• .
Sub-atomic particles

• Atoms are best described

through different atomic
models.
• After a series of experiments
and observations, the models
have revealed the composition
of an atom.
• Atoms are made primarily of
three sub-particles such as
proton, electron and neutron.
•
• All atoms have a nucleus at the
center containing neutrons and
protons.
• Almost all of the mass of an
atom is contained in the nucleus
which also has an overall positive
(+) charge. It has a positive
charge.
• The positive charge arises
because each of the protons has
a +1 charge.
• So what is inside the nucleus?
• protons and neutrons
proton
• protons (p+)
• ➢ positively charged subatomic particle
located in nucleus of an atom
• ➢ mass = 1.673 E - 24 g or 1.0073 u
• ➢ always moving (atomic vibration)
• Protons are heavy and positively charged ( + ) .
it is always moving ( atomic vibration). It was
discovered by Ernest Rutherford.
• The number of proton in an atom determines
the positive nuclear charge of an atom.
• Protons also determine the atomic number (Z)
of an element.

• We can tell how many protons an
atom of an element has by knowing
its atomic number.
• So kung ano ang atomic number
iyon din ang number ng protons na
nasa nucleus.
• For example, the element
beryllium (Be) has an atomic
number of 4. An atom of beryllium
has four protons
• The element Krypton (Kr) has an atomic
number of 36, and one atom of Krypton
has 36 protons
electrons
• .

• electrons (e-)
• ➢ very small negatively charged
subatomic particle found in orbit
around nucleus
• ➢ mass = 1.1 E -29 g or 0.000 549 u
• ➢ mass is 1/1836 that of proton
• ➢ moves very rapidly and is rather
easily accelerated
• ➢ Discovered by J.J. Thomson
Look at the electrons sa picture where
it is located
• .

• They move around the nucleus in energy

levels called shells. They are negatively
charged. They are tiny but they cover a
lot of space. The size of their orbits
determines how big the atom is.
• The proton is 1,836 times heavier than
the electron. When electrons and
protons are placed side by side, the
proton will be as big as a house, while
the electron will only be one of its light
switches.
• Electrons are tiny and negatively
charged ( - ). It moves very rapidly and
is rather easily accelerated.
•

Neutrons
• neutrons (n)

• ➢ subatomic particle located in nucleus

that has no electrical charge

• ➢ mass = 1.675 E - 24 g or 1.0087 u

• ➢ Discovered by James Chadwick

• Neutrons are heavy and neutral ( no
charged )
• Together with protons, neutrons make up
the mass number (A) of an atom.
