“There is a greater potential for privacy invasion,
greater financial exposure in fast-moving markets,
greater potential for mistaking noise for true insight,
and a greater risk of spending lots of money and time
chasing poorly defined problems or opportunities

9 John Christopher V. Reguindin, MIS
Faculty, STI-West Negros University

The importance of big data is not
how much data is available, but
what to do with those data.
Big data is a huge volume of structured and
unstructured data that is generated every day
around the world. This data is so complex that it
becomes almost impossible to analyze them
manually or with the use of basic data
management tools and applications.
4 Aspects of Data:

1. Volume
2. Variety
3. Velocity
4. Veracity
WHY BIG DATA IS
IMPORTANT?
13
BIG DATA

⊡ Determining the root cause of failures, issues, and

defects in near-real time
⊡ Generating coupons at the point of sale based on the
customer’s buying habits
⊡ Recalculating entire risk portfolios in minutes
⊡ Detecting fraudulent behavior before it affects the
organization

14
HOW DOES BIG
DATA WORK?
15
BIG DATA

⊡ Know the sources of data ( Streaming, Social,
Public, others)
⊡ Access, manage and store big data
⊡ Analyze big data
⊡ Make intelligent, data-driven decisions
