IV Priming
Prior to connecting the IV solution and tubing to the patient’s access needle or prior to starting an IV, the tubing must be primed;
this ensures that no air enters the patient’s circulatory system.
IV Priming (Gravity)
◦ Check doctors order
◦ Gather equipment-tubing, IV solution, antiseptic swab, IV pole, pump
◦ IV solution should be at room temperature
◦ Wash hands
◦ Check IV solution with 10 rights-drug, dose, route, time, client, documentation, reason, response, refuse, education
◦ Open IV solution and place bag on IV pole
◦ Open infusion set, maintaining sterility of both tubing ends
◦ Place roller clamp about 2-5 cm below drip chamber and move roller clamp to off position
◦ Remove protective sheath over IV tubing port on plastic IV solution bag
◦ Remove protective cap from tubing insertion spike and insert spike into port of IV bag(do not touch spike)
IV Priming
◦ Compress drip chamber and release, allowing it to fill one-third to one-half full
◦ Open clamp partially
◦ Prime tubing by filling with IV solution
◦ Be sure that tubing is clear of air and bubbles
◦ Attach tubing to IV site/medlock after cleaning port with antiseptic swab
◦ Place label on tubing with date, time and initials of when hung
◦ Wash hands
