When do we use quantifiers?

We can use quantifiers with countable and uncountable nouns to


talk about quantities of things.

How many carrots and sandwiches are there in


the fridge? And how much milk is there?

There are a lot of carrots and some sandwiches,


but there isn’t much milk.

Is there much orange juice?

Find the nouns. Which are countable? Which are
uncountable?

Can we bake a cake? Is there any butter or any


sugar? And how many eggs are there? Oh, good!
There’s some butter, and there’s a lot of sugar.
There aren’t many eggs, but we can make a cake
with only two. And there are a lot of lemons.
We can make a cake with lemons in it!

Countable: cake, eggs, lemons

With uncountable nouns and

There’s an egg. There’s some cheese.


There are some chips. There’s a lot of/lots of soup.
There are a lot of/lots of chips.
Negative There aren’t any cookies. There isn’t any bread.
There aren’t many beans. There isn’t much butter.
Questions Are there any forks? Is there any cola?
How many forks are there? How much cola is there?

With plural countable nouns


we use many.
With uncountable nouns
we use much.
