Health Promotion and the workplace Safety
and Insurance
• According to the ILO, Health promotion in the workplace
complements occupational safety and health measures as part of the
combined efforts of employers, workers and national authorities to
improve the health and well-being of men and women at work.
• Health promotion and well-being at work programs focus on the
promotion of health among all workers and their families through
preventive and assistance programs in the areas of workplace stress,
violence at work drug and alcohol abuse and the promotion of
tobacco-free workplaces.
Workplace Health Promotion programs
• A workplace health promotion program is a systemic strategy to
improve health, knowledge, attitude, skills, and behavior.
• These programs are designed to improve the health of individuals,
families, and communities.
• They do this through;
Improving work organization and the working environment;
Promoting active participation;
Encouraging personal development.
Workplace Health Promotion programs
• Programs designed to help people quit smoking.
• Access to Healthy Food
• Physical Activity Opportunities
• Promoting Women’s Reproductive Health
• Promoting Clinical Preventative Services
• Better Sleep Programs
• Promote and Support Lifestyle Change
• Helping Employees With Disease Management
Determinants of workplace health promotion
• Workplace regulations: set minimum standards in terms of preventing risks and managing
health, safety and well-being at work, and feature prominently in efforts to prevent long
working hours, limit smoking, and promote timely return-to-work following sickness absence.
• Financial incentives include lower insurance premiums, tax credits and subsidies for
employers of SMEs. These incentives are important levers for governments to encourage and
facilitate employers – particularly in SMEs – to go beyond basic accident prevention and
safety, and to promote health and well-being at the workplace.
• Disseminating information and guidance developed together with other stakeholders, such
as charities, trade unions and employer associations, can facilitate the promotion of health
and well-being at the workplace
• Certification and award schemes provide reputational benefits for employers, by certifying
that employers meet certain standards relating to health and well-being promotion at work,
such as the Health and Productivity Management programme in Japan
Insurance and health and safety
• Insurers play a major role in helping organizations to protect against
and manage health and safety risks.
• They do this by providing advice and guidance on assessing and
managing risk, and incentivizing good behavior.
• Insurers complement the regulatory system, but are not themselves
regulators – they deal with civil, not criminal, liability.
Insurance and health and safety
• Insurers have identified five key measures organizations can adopt to
manage their health and safety risks effectively;
 Ensure senior management's commitment to and leadership on
health and safety
Obtain competent assistance
Adopt a structured approach
Complete suitable and sufficient risk assessments
Foster a positive culture
