Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy:
⬥ The primary function of a fluoroscope is to
perform dynamic studies. The fluoroscope is
used to visualize the motion of internal
structures and fluids.
⬥ The purpose of this technique is to get real-
time and moving images of the insides of a
person by way of the fluoroscope.
⬥ If something is observed that the radiologist
would like to preserve for later study, a
radiograph can be made with little interruption
of fluoroscopic examination. Such a
radiograph is known as spot film.

Fluoroscopy
⬥ Visualization of vessels is called
Angiography.
⬥ The two main areas of angiography
are:
⬦ Neuroradiology
⬦ Vascular Radiology.
⬥ During fluoroscopy the x-Ray tube is
operated at less than 5mA. Normally 2
to 4mA.

5
X-ray Tube
⬥ Same design with conventional
X-ray tubes but operates for a
longer period of time with
shorter mA (0.5 mA-5 mA).
⬥ Operated by a foot switch.
⬥ Located beneath the patient
support table.

6
Table
⬥ Can be changed from
Horizontal to Vertical position.
⬥ Equipped with a footboard for
routine Radiographic
Examinations.
⬥ Some are made of Carbon
Fiber material making them
durable and lessens X-ray
attenuation by the Table Top.

7
Image Intensifier Tower
⬥ The image intensifier tower
contains the image intensifier
and a group of controls that
allow the operator to adjust the
field size, move the x-ray tube
and table, and make spot film
exposures.
⬥ Lead Drape hangs from the
Image Intensifier Tower to
absorb radiation scattered from
the Patient. 8
