What is Diabetes

● Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how the body turns food to energy, mainly

refer to the lack of uptake of glucose in the bloodstream due to not enough insulin

● 3 Types
○ Type 1

○ Type 2

○ Gestational
Type 1 Diabetes

● Stems from autoimmune disease destroying beta cells in the pancreas


○ Causes the inability to produce insulin
● Lead to:
○ Cardiovascular disease
○ Loss of kidney function
○ Eye issues
○ Nerve damage

○ β Cell mutations
Type 2 Diabetes

● The body does not use insulin well and can not keep blood sugar at a normal level.
● Mainly stems from lifestyle choices
● Effects:
○ Cardiovascular disease
○ Loss of kidney function
○ Eye issues
○ Nerve damage

○ Diet
○ Sedentary Lifestyle
○ Sleep deprivation
○ Obesity

Conclusion

Diabetes is a complex diseases with lots biological and socioeconomic components involved make it
very difficult to manage among the young age groups

There has been a lot done in the way of helping to mitigate the effects it has on people but there is still
much that still needs to be done to get the rate of new diabetes cases under control
