• Describe and explain arthritis

• Deepen your understanding of the lifestyle impact it can
have through looking at a case study
What do we have left to cover?
What is Arthritis?
• Arthritis causes pain and
inflammation in joint
• In the UK, around 10 million
people have it
• It affects people of all ages
• There are 2 types-
osteoarthritis and
reheumatoid arthritis
What is Arthritis?
Osteoarthritis arthritis
• The cartilage lining starts to
roughen and thin out which
makes movement more
difficult and causes pain and
stiffness
• This means the tendons and
ligaments have to work
harder
What is Arthritis?
Osteoarthritis arthritis
• This can cause swelling and
the formation of bony spurs-
osteophytes
• Severe loss of cartilage can
lead to bone rubbing on bone
• It can alter the shape of the
joint
What is Arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis

• The body’s immune system

targets different joints
• This leads to pain and
swelling
• The synovial membrane is
first affected
What is Arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis

• This leads to more swelling

and changes in the joints
shape
• This can cause bone and
cartilage to break down
